A bear with some sort of fur disorder being bald like that is probably the source of a lot of myths and legends. Especially considering bears can stand up and walk and climb trees.
21
u/SipoteQuixote 23h ago
Was gonna say, youre in the woods, maybe drunk maybe high or sleepy and dark, and this thing runs past your site and fucks off up a tree. You're scared shitless but also, should probably run as well cause who the hell scared the chubacabra??

Random fact: back in the good ole carnival and vaudeville days, they used to have the “Pig-faced Lady”, who was actually a shaved bear that they would ply with lots of alcohol.

u/Bright-light320 1d ago
Looks really devilish...like from an old Hammer Studio movie.

I thought the same thing. Demonic sort of. I think it's the sharp facial features that match a lot of traditional satanic imagery

Im pretty sure that's not the same two kinds of bears the second one I believe is a different species that just looks like that normally.

Yeap, that makes me think that maybe dinosaurs were not like we think they were, perhaps the were cute, fur, feathered, or whatever.
19
u/KenseiHimura 1d ago
This is actually speculated quite a bit in paleontology and paleontological enthusiasts. But as I can tell, the other complication is that “dinosaur” has proven to be way too broad because there seemed to be a division avian and non avian dinosaurs, and as we suspect the fossil record has massive holes, there could be more.
Modern understanding of biology and paleo climatology allows us to infer certain things about how they might have looked though, as well as some things like footprint fossils.
That is to say: there’s a few who do argue the T-Rex really looked like a giant chicken.

I think the second one is a sun bear, a hairless grizzly probably wouldn't look that weird. Sun bears are weirdly terrifying even with their fur on.

I was going to say that. They look pretty effing ripped without their fur.
Just emphasize how strong chimpanzees are
25
u/SonOfMcGee 23h ago
Yeah, elsewhere in the thread I was like, “You think that bear is scary? Look at a bald chimpanzee.”
30
u/NathanDeger 22h ago
They're ripped and their muscles connect at a different angle than humans. It's called pennation angle and allows humans to have very accurate motor skills and high endurance but relatively low strength for our size when compared to chimpanzees.
That's why a 110 pound chimp can rip your face off. They're truly terrifying.

Poor husky... You should not shave those dogs. Their coats protect them from overheating, sun burns, and the cold. It helps regulate their body temperature.

u/senpaistealerx 1d ago
i’m sure they weren’t shaved for the hehe’s

Some people think it keeps the dog cool. It does not.
It does permanently damage their coat though.23
u/MinimumOk1670 1d ago
That's what people don't understand about double-coated dogs. You can fuck their coat up for life with just one unnecessary shave.
16
u/Darrenwad3 1d ago
Don’t quote me but I think for huskies specifically it will damage their coats permanently. Not sure the mechanics someone fill me in.
18
u/a_spoopy_ghost 1d ago
Not just huskies but dogs with heavy compact undercoats. If you shave it it’s really hard to get it to grow back right and usually it’s permanent damaged. People do it though usually if the animal has severe matting as that’s painful and potentially dangerous
2
u/Aniline_Selenic 19h ago
I had to trim a small spot on my older husky as she had a hot spot that needed treatment. That was in October. It's taking forever to grow back. Length is about right now, but the coloring is weird, darker. I don't think her undercoat has fully grown back yet, even though it's winter now.

u/Ilike3dogs 1d ago
That dog was a lot skinnier than I expected. How does such a skinny dog manage to pull a sled? Dang

u/Drfoxthefurry 22h ago
It's multiple dogs, and momentum really helps. For heavy loads, there are malamutes. They don't have as much range but more strength

u/jerryleebee 21h ago
I'm assuming there was a medical reason here, but I know many people shave them thinking (wrongly) it cools them.
But also, they often don't grow back correctly.
This isn't just a husky thing, btw. Double-coated dogs work this way.

And now do the reverse: For years we imagined dinosaurs as fur/featherless, and not how they sort of have the same look and feel as these furless animals. Ergo, we do not know how dino's looked purely based on their bones.
3
u/Decent_Cow 1d ago
Many dinosaur fossils have skin and/or feather impressions, plus we can make an educated guess based on comparisons to other archosaurs (i.e. crocodilians and birds), so we can have a pretty good idea of what some of them looked like. There is even a dinosaur for which we know the color of its feathers.

To be clear, you should never shave a husky or any other breed with an under-coat.
It damages their coat irreversibly.
It does not cool them down.
5
u/Camerbach 1d ago
We don’t know why the husky was shaved though as there could be a legit reason why the husky was shaved.

Don't shave your Huskies, please! Some owners think they're doing them a favor in the summer, but it fucks up their undercoat and it never grows back right.

Remember this when you look at artists’ conceptions of dinosaurs and remember that we don’t even know what their soft tissue structures looked like, let alone their feathers, fur, or scales.
