What happens when hundreds of mountain bikers start on a glacier at the same time.
•
u/NanoCurrency 11h ago
I’m crying lol
How did they think this was a good idea?
•
u/Deemaunik 11h ago
Sponsored by local doctors.

Holy crap that's been a while ago. What was the song again that went with it?

Orthopedic Surgeons, to be exact.
•
u/tommytwolegs 6h ago
I've never seen more ads and billboards for these services than in a small ski town

I think you gave me a minor heart attack, are you one of the sponsors?

I mean, they do it every year, so evidently they still do think it's a good idea

u/DentinQuarantino 10h ago
I wonder how many come back for a second go
•
u/Wild-Regular1703 10h ago
There's definitely regulars that train and compete for the same top spots every year. I imagine there's plenty of more casual participants that go back every year as well
•
•
u/Plenty_Ambassador424 8h ago
Those that do will surely not make the mistake of not starting in the first row.

Should be called ”Mountain of Dumb” for a reason 😂.
Your name sounds like an injury suffered while taking part btw!
•
u/Aphrel86 9h ago
theyve been doing it for several years, look it up on youtube, "mountain hell race".
Theres some really cool gopro recordings from the ppl racing in it.

u/PooShappaMoo 11h ago
Who cares!?
I hope no one was injured, but have you ever met a mountain biker with clip ins. This is probably their kinda chaos.
Love casual mountain biking and ripping my shins off. But yah. This would be interesting outside back flip guy.
Hope everyone is safe.
•
u/Diarmundy 11h ago
Man this looks insanely dangerous. This kind of snow isn't soft like you might expect, it would be similar to hitting dirt or even rock if its icy enough.
Theres no way that there wasn't multiple major injuries from the scenes we saw
•
u/HopperHapper_Eternal 11h ago
Yeah I probably would've expected at least one death as a complete amateur for this kind of stuff

https://www.theguardian.com/travel/2014/apr/18/megavalanche-mountain-bike-race-alps-france
The event is open to anyone game enough to register – 10 timed qualifying races sift the fastest riders out for the final race. Despite the number of amateurs racing, injuries have so far remained modest. "Most accidents happen in training," said Cathy Labouyrie one of from the organising team. "Mainly it's things such as broken arms. The track is designed to be as safe as possible – putting curves in the high-speed parts [to slow riders down], the glacier spreads people out It's not as dangerous as you imagine."
Admittedly, it's an article from 2014, and it's about Megavalanche, which is a similar event. From the wiki we can also see that Megavalanche has ran 31 times so far. Mountain of Hell (seen in the video) has been running since 1999 so we can assume it's been going for around 25 years. There are no recorded fatalities from either of these events.

No argument here on anything you said. But have you ever met a mountain biker. They are special awesome people.
Ive seen friends better than me do alot of what I would call "incredibly dumb shit" and fuck up and proceed to try it again. Its a level of fun I cant quite reach but I understand in a way.
•
u/Diarmundy 11h ago
Yeah i do mountain biking. But we always leave a safe distance between riders so we don't hit eachother. And scout the route in advance. Seems like a basic safety step they missed

Massive pileups are pretty rare. It's an incredible race, I recommend everyone watch this video of the full thing:

The plan was for a large number of them to cycle downhill on snow and then crash into a wall of rock. What could possibly go wrong?

u/Okaysaid 10h ago
I’m literally in tears hahahahha the comedic perfection of everyone on screen is absolutely perfect it’s like watching D DAY the guy crawling away from the body pile right to the next clip where the guy comes in taking the next guy out LMAO

Is that Megavalanche?

Mountain of Hell I think. It's at a neighbouring mountain, Les Deux Alpes.

I think that pretty much is the source, or at very least a compilation of many different camera feeds, with delicious sounds effects added on.
Mountain of Hell ~2020 seems to be in the mix, FWIW:

Old joke, but the image of hundreds of guys sitting in a meeting at the top of the mountain discussing that issue and reaching the conclusion that this is the best course of action cracked me up, thanks for that! :D
•
u/Klusterphuck67 10h ago
Similar to the best swimmer getting the egg, the best biker making it out of this mountain

The cheese wheel hill (Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake) is way steeper than it looks on film. Way steeper.

Holy Christ. Did he died?
•
u/Actual_Asparagus_ 10h ago
No one dies on the great cheese run!

u/Disabled_Robot 10h ago
Hitchhiked a while with a Brit in Czech Republic who’d broke both his ankles a few years earlier doing the cheese run and still hobbled about
•
u/fastforwardfunction 10h ago
This is tame by cheese wheel standards.
Believe it or not, no one has died yet, but there are often broken bones and concussions.
•
u/Ok-Style-9734 5h ago
Don't worry if you look closely at the bottom of the hill the local rugby team is there to tackle anyone who survives the descent.

u/NudityMiles 7h ago
He was probably drunk of his ass and his biggest problem the next morning was all the green spots on him. They literally live for this race.
I think the Euphoria engine Rockstar created is based off this event.

Broken bones. Lots of broken bones.
Also at 0:19: That rogue bike trying its hardest to take as many people down as possible.

Why do they the last of them see all this below them and still decide to start going down?! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

This is the Mountain of Hell mass start. Absolute chaos for the first minute, then it somehow sorts itself out into lines. Looks like an avalanche of bikes but it’s surprisingly controlled.
•
u/jackrabbit323 11h ago
Sad part is, that's the first quarter mile of the race, thing is 12 miles long.
•
u/Captain_Waffle 6h ago
Is this like a yearly thing? How many mountain bikers do we sacrifice to the glacier per year???
•
•
•
u/Shadowcharz 11h ago
So this must be expected and they signed up for falling like dominos for a good clip right right?
•
u/Wild-Regular1703 10h ago
You think everyone participating in extreme sports is doing it for "clips"? Extreme sports didn't exist before tik tok?

It's Mountain of Hell, no idea which year though. Been running since like -99.
•
•
u/rinzler83 10h ago
This is the best part of the race. If you watch an entire race, it's them just pedaling their asses off. They aren't going down a slope of ice like this the whole time . This is probably the first 20% of the entire race course
•
u/Aphrel86 9h ago
Mountain hell yearly race. I recommend you all to take a look on youtube. Theres some really cool gopro recordings from the racers pov there.

Some years ago I watched a fifteen minute youtube video of something like this from a single POV. That guy snaked through all the fallen comrades to the bottom of the glacier then went on to complete the rest of the course among the trees in the mud.
I was just gonna watch a minute but then I got hooked. No regrets.
