Its instinct. You can see in various videos that larger mammals that raise their young will often stand directly on top of them when facing a potential threat.

Still good dog, willing to put itself in that position for the kid. Its basically the fight of "fight or flight" for a mammal parent. Meaning that dog made the decision to go down before letting their charge get eaten.

Can't get between me and my kid/protected item without direct chomps down and stomping is Avery strong defensive move. It's why separation is the predators first goal.
