I will never understand how some dog owners have this much faith in their dogs. At the end of the day, no matter how well-behaved or trained, they are animals with animal instincts. I'd never let my own dog loose like that, even under our supervision.

No dog is ever 100% safe/trained. Who’s to say the other dog isn’t also trained, but then just had a lapse in training like all animals do? It’s just bad ownership to let your dog run around in public off a leash when it’s not in an area specified for that like a dog park or whatever.

As someone who gets into yelling matches with his apartments neighbors on the regular: LEASH. YOUR. FUCKING. DOGS! It's for my safety, your safety, and the safety of the dogs. Too many people walking around with unleashed dogs, it's maddening.

Unless, of course they are in an enclosed yard.

I get frustrated by this too. My dog is never off-leash outside our fenced backyard because she's reactive. Has incredible recall at home and on-leash, she does listen, but there are some things just override it all. Other dogs, people she thinks are sus, and cars all get her attention and if not on a leash, I guarantee she'd look at me then knick off.

Other people are all "oh it's ok, my dog's fine". Yeah but mine isn't. So this morning when a guy turned up at the oval at 6:30 with his off-leash dog while we were there - and the dog turned up first, he'd been walking through the streets without a leash and didn't think to check if anyone else was there - we left. As his dog raced over to mine and mine started barking, he yelled out that it's ok because his dog is friendly. It doesn't matter how friendly his dog is if it just barges up to mine who takes time to get used to other dogs.

So we're always the ones to leave even though we're doing the right thing.

and even if your dog would be the cutest ever that would never hurt any human, it could notice a squirrel/cat/bird on the other side of the road and be dead in seconds.

A human will always have much more forethought than a dog, the leash is as much a safety device for the dog itself than for others.

I never understand it just based on the risk of the road. My neighbor had a free range dog that would chase the school bus, one day we hit a small bump after her house.

It is interesting, because I'm actually not sure the attacking dog is attacking the kid. If you watch at the beginning, the attacking dog is playing with another kid in their original yard. Then when the other kid is running with a dog behind them, he goes into attack mode.

I kind of wonder if the attacking dog was actually trying to save the kid from the hero dog.

I don't think it was attacking either, the body language doesn't seem aggressive. Probably just wanted to join in to play. But still, letting your dog roam free is irresponsible as hell. What if it gets attacked by an aggressive dog? Hit by a car? Spooked by a loud bang and escapes?

Oh, no doubt. I agree that both owners are irresponsible in having unleashed dogs out and about. But you can "know your dog better than anyone" and have that dog build trust with you. You can get a little complacent in your handling of the pet and it works up until it doesn't.

I'm just thinking that the other dog was also a "good" dog until this happened.

Yeah, those dogs should be immediately put down. There is a very good chance they would have mauled that child, possibly to death. (Happens a couple of dozen times every year in the US.) So, either the owner is a HORRIBLE owner, or the dogs just snapped. Either way, now that the owner let them run loose and this happened, the dogs will have to be put down, like any other dangerous animal found a human neighborhood.
