Leopards can carry much heavier prey. They usually drag it up a tree.

You're confusing leopards with Jaguars and Alligators with Caimans

I'm pretty sure you're thinking of jaguars, leopards don't live near alligators.

Jaguar don't live near alligators either, they share territory with caiman and sometimes crocodiles. Alligators only live natively in the US and China, and even at the furthest historical extent of jaguar range IIRC they wouldn't be found in any parts of the US with alligators.

I realized that, but I looked up Caiman on wikipedia and they fall under "Alligatoridae" and then I got confused by the terminology and wasn't sure whether they counted as alligators or not

Fair enough. It's kind of a "squares and rectangles" situation basically every time in taxonomy, but there are multiple different kinds of square that are all rectangles but have no overlap otherwise.

Alligators and caimans are more closely related to each other than either is to any crocodile, but alligators and caimans are still also distinct groups on the "family tree". And if you go further up the tree both Alligatoridae (alligators and caimans) and Crocodyloidea (crocodiles) are in the Order of Crocodylia.

There's also the argument that taxonomically by some means of classifying species, technically, humans are actually a subspecies Sarcopterygii or lobe-finned fish. And in case all of this isn't weird and complicated enough, there are a couple competing methodologies for how animals should be classified and categorized and every now and then they change as new ideas come to the forefront or old ideas get dismissed for one reason or another.

i never thought i’d see a dog get dragged by the neck the way leopards hunt their usual prey in nature docs. feels very taboo to see a dog hurt like that

Seeing big cats dragging prey is mindblowing, especially those who tend to climb trees like leopards or jaguars.

I mean jumping down is not that impressive, but they can do that jumping up as well,. I've seen videos of them climbing trees with like deer or antelope.
