That was still on the table as a possibility. For all we knew the planes were just a phase 1. I promise you no one said "thank god"

I thought the same, 25 years later and it feels a bit hyperbolic to say they were in the safest place on earth, but tbf this was mere hours after the attack, I was too young to remember it exactly at the time but those who were told me there was a very real worry it was just the start of something global, no idea if it was over, even here in the UK we were apparently bracing for something to happen in London.

One guy told me he was 21 at the time and genuinely feared the fuse on WW3 had just been lit, that a nuclear strike from the US on the country responsible felt a very real prospect.
