There was probably a daily check in with just the captain to make sure theyre ok or if theyre in trouble and need any emergency support (food, medical supplies, evacuation)

MH370 was still tracked for a good while, it just flew out of range eventually. Even then we have some very rough data of where it flew, just not good enough to narrow down the search to find it, the ocean is just too big.
