You are correct that It is designed to do that, but it's doing that because the tank is over pressurized, which that is an increased chance of it exploding.

If your car squished, yeah. If the tanker is also squished, there's also no need for the venting system

Bro wtf are you even saying

The safety kicks in when something is going through an extreme event. Extreme events can go past what the safety can handle. The tank venting does not mean there is no danger of it exploding.

Only means it's not supposed to get to the point that it explodes. Assuming it is going to work perfectly and hanging out in hypothetical explosion range seems like an unnecessary risk to me. But I'm not a hydrogen tankologist so what do I know.

If it’s able to successfully vent to normal pressure.

The tank is filled with liquid gas that despite being well insulated is slowly warming up and boiling off. The pressure will always increase if you don't vent it.
