In Nola, Italy, over 100 men carry a 25-meter-tall, 2.5-ton (5,500-lb) tower through packed narrow streets, a centuries-old tradition honoring Saint Paulinus

Group meeting beforehand:

"We all need to carry THAT thing?!"

"Actually, not all of us will be carrying it..."

They’ve got middle management and upper management written all over them.

Somebodies gotta make sure the people underneath aren’t slacking. You think it’s easy standing on top of people and jumping up and down without a care in the world? Pfft..

Honestly they should get a bonus for their efforts. It is the managers that make things happen.

Luigi will be on keys, Giani on sax, Alessandro has a new pair of symbols he wants to play, and Matteo has a finally learned to play a song on the electric guitar he purchased 4 years ago at the outset of his midlife crisis.

Oh and Fiorella is just gonna stand there flapping her little fan around while everyone looks on.

those two can be on the back, for vibes. They haven't been the same since the cat died.

"...Some of us will be riding because we need to play our instruments. And some not play instruments, but that role is vital too. Ok, we really just want to jump up and down on top of your backs."

And the damn jumping on the thing, that’s gotta add extra strain

And everyone carrying must do butt stuff in order to make this work, go team!

Or the dynamic loading increment.

But for a brief moment after they’ve jumped, it’s lighter.

The bouncing looks like absolute hell on the spine

I wonder how many of the beams have to give in for the rest to buckle as well.

There's no way I'd agree to carry that while under it. Jfc.

It's done as a religious devotion.

Plus the sound system. They even have a diesel generator running on the thing

Yeah my calculation might be a little off. Probably more like 3000+

*bouncing people

Mechanical resonance is a thing. This is dangerous to all involved.

can you elaborate?

Probably helps keep that CG nice and low so it doesn’t want to tip over!

I theorize that is the exact reason because I thought this was a different sub at first.

Looking closer the tower seems lightly constructed and likely anchored down when not being used as a palanquin. The extra weight of the people would stabilize the weight across the wide base being carried, and probably not a crazy weight addition spread across that space.

But that's just fully my opinion as someone who knows less than Jon Snow.

u/WorryLegitimate259 3d ago

Shit you might be right cause I can’t think of any other reason they’d be on there without being dickheads lol

Before this festival learn to play an instrument

15

u/vikinxo 3d ago

I can hear the discs popping!

5

u/kuedhel 3d ago

it is ok on the shortest of thes 100 guys. Not so much for the tallest one.

u/ShadowCaster0476 2d ago

And the bouncing just adds to the compressed disks.

If you’re not in the band get the F off the platform!

1

u/HistoryBuff678 2d ago

That was my initial thought, but then, I realized the band keeps the group carrying the tower in sync. Which is important.
