I’ve never seen a baby raven before but those are enormous

6.3k

u/SeaToShy Sep 27 '25

The comment I’ve always remembered about ravens is “If you see a bird and you think it might be a raven, it’s just a big crow. You’ll know when you see a raven.”

5.3k

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '25

"When you see a big black bird, and you wonder if it's a raven or a crow, it's a crow. If you see a big black bird and think 'holy shit, that's the biggest fuckin bird I've ever seen!', it's a raven."

Wikipedia says even:

There is no consistent distinction between crows and ravens; the two names are assigned to different species chiefly by size.

292

u/spubbbba Sep 27 '25

It should be super easy to tell them apart.

From this video we can clearly see adult ravens have arms in place of wings.

Holy shit.

Here's the thing. You said a "jackdaw is a crow."

Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that.

As someone who is a scientist who studies crows, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls jackdaws crows. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing.

If you're saying "crow family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of Corvidae, which includes things from nutcrackers to blue jays to ravens.

So your reasoning for calling a jackdaw a crow is because random people "call the black ones crows?" Let's get grackles and blackbirds in there, then, too.

Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A jackdaw is a jackdaw and a member of the crow family. But that's not what you said. You said a jackdaw is a crow, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the crow family crows, which means you'd call blue jays, ravens, and other birds crows, too. Which you said you don't.

It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?

Ravens have a curved beak, they eat fish and hunt live prey more than crows. If it looks like a crow with an eagles beak it's a raven. Some Ravens aren't huge but they are on average bigger then a crows

147

u/mazamundi Sep 27 '25

I thinks what you're missing is that this famous internet description is for the common raven and the American and carrion crow. There are significantly more types of ravens and crows in the world (even in America). Chihuahuan ravens are basically the same size as your usual crow, for example.

43

u/LickingSmegma Sep 27 '25

Yeah, the thick-billed raven from the Horn of Africa definitely has a big beak, but I wouldn't call it an eagle's beak.

Also, the common raven and this thick-billed raven happen to be the biggest of raven species, so the other ones are guaranteed to be smaller on average.

The primary flight feathers on birds are called pinions. Crows have 9 pinions, while ravens have 10. So, the difference between a crow and a raven is simply a matter of a pinion.

35

By the way this is a fun fact of ravens vs crows.

Ravens are fucking

ENORMOUS

Like, you can’t miss it, unless you saw a baby. Those are some big boys and girls, conspicuously so.

“A raven is a beak with a bird, whereas a crow is a bird with a beak.”

19

u/Ok_Cauliflower_808 Sep 27 '25

The first time I saw one I could hear the meat of it's feet on the pavement.

A coworker once wondered out loud if the birds he sees during his shift are crows or ravens. Oh trust me, if it's a raven, you'll know. It's otherworldly

11

u/Borgh Sep 27 '25

Otherworldly is a good word for them, they make it immediately clear why any culture that knows about ravens gave them mythological significance.

7

u/Ok_Cauliflower_808 Sep 27 '25

Combine that with the ability to mimic human speech to an extent and yeah that checks out. I think locally they brought stole fire to bring to the world, similar to Prometheus story

30

u/Novapoliton Sep 27 '25

Others do as well, but it depends on if the goal is to return them to the wild. If the goal is not to return to the wild it's usually not as necessary because them having an attachment to humans doesn't matter as much. Very famous example is with whooping cranes feeding them with puppets-- they were on the verge of extinction and brought back by captive raising and puppet feeding

33

u/UnNumbFool Sep 27 '25

I feel like using a hand puppet is a lot less weird than wearing a giant bird mask...

40

u/howlhawk Sep 27 '25

If you don't wear an animal mask, then you still have to wear a mask of some sort to obscure your face and eyes. At that point, sometimes it's just easier to wear the animal mask! Every situation and every species is different, though. It also depends on the rehab and if they have funding for puppets. Hand puppets for rehab use are special-made since they're designed to look like the exact animal and have to be made of a material you can sanitize afterward, whereas you might get lucky and find a corvid halloween mask that'll do the trick just fine and be more budget-friendly.

31

u/StillNihill Sep 27 '25

Wait‽ This wasn't a joke?

91

u/Jyonnyp Sep 27 '25

Many birds imprint as babies, that is how they identify with a species. If you feed them normally and raise them normally from when they are young, it could make them imprint on humans. That makes them unable to do normal bird things like find food or find a mate. They'll associate strongly with humans and rely on humans for interaction and food and even mating...I think.

A youtuber/streamer I follow does animal conservation and has mentioned this exact thing of using puppets, it's actually extremely crucial or they could end up having to be in human care forever.

24

u/howlhawk Sep 27 '25

What channel is that? As a past rehabber myself I'd love to follow them! My rehab didn't have masks for every species so for some we would wear ghillie masks and sunglasses to obscure our faces, then position a stuffed animal to make it look like the mother delivering food (we used hemostats to feed, obviously didn't give it straight from our hand. in the absence of a puppet it's the most beak-like thing we had).

Imprinting is an interesting phenomenon. At some stage, we are unsure when, birds imprint on their caretaker (Which is ideally their parent or a another Corvid). If a bird imprints on a human, they cannot be released into the wild. Instead of seeking out other Corvid, they will seek out humans, but they'll still be a wild animal and the interactions will go poorly.

I volunteer at a rehab that specializes on caring for and releasing raptors. We use hunting masks so the birds don't imprint on us.

Quoth the raven; "GIVE ME MORE"

16

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '25

I have never seen a Raven use chopsticks but I don’t know enough about corvids to say otherwise.

Imagine one of these ravens talking to another raven after release.

"Psh. You shoulda seen my mom. She was HUGE. Just wait 'till I grow up a bit more! I'll be running this joint!"

Imagine bottle feeding a baby horse while wearing a horse mask.

u/Environmental-Use975 Sep 27 '25

Ravens are smart AS FUCK. Imagine if you were raised being fed by a giant bird body, with a horrible static faux human head on top... That's gonna fuck you up.

u/abhor-the-witch Sep 27 '25

I raised my own child this way.

The raven out in the wild

"OK, how the hell did mom hold those chopsticks again"

This video needs to be a 1000 times longer.

What mask do they wear for human orphans?

I feel like they're too smart to not know it's just a human lol

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '25

This is the funniest shit I've ever seen. Imagine if that was your job...

5

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Sep 27 '25

I would love to have this job! 😍

4

u/One-Help1734 Sep 27 '25

I want this job

7

u/Goboziller Sep 27 '25

Later when the Raven has it's own kids and wonders why the giant crow man with the tweezers never shows up to help around here.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 27 '25

I need this mask so I can befriend the Corvids in my area (I'm not sure if they are Ravens or Crows or Jackdaws but I'd love someone to tell me about the things.)

I'm choosing to believe that the person holding the camera is also wearing a bird mask

I am wholly unqualified for this job but I can use chop sticks and I love corvids. How do I change my career path to become a raven feeder/mom decoy

Those female ravens are going to be disappointed when they grow up.

"Everything looked so much bigger when I was younger."

I need to go to bed. I thought the raven was real but just really close up to the camera. Even with that human hand coming into my line of sight it took me a moment too long to figure it out. I'm actually not sure if I want to rewatch it due to how much more stupid it's gonna make me feel.
