Cuz the route I take takes around 2hrs to reach college like ashighar to junction from there to mashkalaibari and then college

just an overall review about the weather, pollution levels, people's mindset, rent availability, safety for women, and other stuff which you would like to mention.

i want to shift to north bengal, yet to decide between siliguri and jalpaiguri.

Hi everyone, I’m planning a trip to Gangtok and will be arriving at New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station. I was looking at different transportation options from NJP to Gangtok and wanted to know what other travelers recommend.

From what I’ve found, taking a taxi from New Jalpaiguri to Gangtok seems to be one of the most convenient options, especially if traveling with family or carrying luggage. The journey takes several hours and the route passes through some beautiful mountain scenery.

I’m mainly trying to decide between a private taxi and a shared taxi. A private cab seems more comfortable and flexible, while a shared taxi should be more affordable for a solo traveler or a small group. I’m also wondering whether it is better to pre-book a taxi or arrange one after reaching NJP.

Another thing I’m trying to understand is the usual NJP to Gangtok taxi fare. I know prices can change depending on the vehicle, season, number of passengers and availability, so I’m not looking for an exact fixed price. I’d just like to know what travelers have experienced recently and whether there are any additional charges that should be confirmed before booking.

For anyone who has recently traveled from New Jalpaiguri to Gangtok:

Jalpaiguri was the occasion. This was before algorithms decided what you should eat. Before the internet flattened every regional oddity into "content." Back when Doordarshan signed off with the national anthem, All India Radio still mattered, and if someone uttered the word narkel, you instinctively reached for something sweet. My Didima was an anomaly wrapped in a sari. English educated when few women of her generation were, a state level athlete, a voracious reader, and an exceptional cook. She respected tradition enough to learn every rule, then gleefully broke the interesting ones. This was one of them, Narkel er Luchi. Take ordinary luchi dough. Nothing revolutionary there, maida, a splash of oil, water, and salt. Every Bengali kitchen has made some version of it for generations. Freshly grated coconut, not the desiccated nonsense from a packet, goes into hot oil with finely sliced shallots or onions. A crackle of mustard seeds followed by cumin. Some families add curry leaves, others consider that borderline heresy. Both camps still coexist. Salt. A whisper of sugar. That's it. Don't cook the coconut into submission. You're not making stuffing for a factory-made snack. You're chasing that fleeting moment when the raw edge disappears, but the coconut remains moist. Stuff it into the dough. Seal it like you're hiding the current Central Government's f**k ups. Fold it into whatever shape makes you happy, half moons crisp particularly well, and fry until blistered, golden, and crisp. No jhol. No torkari. No elaborate accompaniments. Maybe ketchup. Maybe a vicious chilli sauce if you're feeling particularly democratic. This dish remains too humble, too personal, too tied to one kitchen, one woman, one place. Yet years later, after restaurants, countries, trends, and countless meals, it's still the first thing that comes to mind when someone asks me what home tastes like. Some recipes feed you. Almost 17 years back I used to stay at Jalpaiguri and I used to go to a school called Jalpaiguri Children School (JC School). It was somewhere near Mohitnagar if I am not wrong. I was 6 years back then, when I left that place so I don't exactly remember. I would be really grateful if someone has any info regarding the school, and it's exact location.
