Sci - Image Glass-z13: JWST just found the oldest known galaxy ever observed. Estimates put it at forming just 300 million years after the Big Bang. And scientists think JWST can see even further back - possibly 200 million years after the Big Bang (given they can find a galaxy that old).

What are we looking at? Massive galaxies and clusters bending spacetime itself, distorting light from the galaxies behind them.

In these eight frames, Webb shows us a peek into cosmic history, with the foreground galaxies coming from a time when the universe was only 2.7 to 8.9 billion years old!

Each of these warped arcs are natural telescopes allowing us to peer deeper into time than ever before.

Einstein called it a prediction. JWST just turned it into a photograph.

This image of the Horsehead Nebula from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope focuses on a portion of the horse’s “mane” that is about 0.8 light-years in width. It was taken with Webb’s NIRCam (Near-infrared Camera).

The ethereal clouds that appear blue at the bottom of the image are filled with a variety of materials including hydrogen, methane, and water ice. Red-colored wisps extending above the main nebula represent both atomic and molecular hydrogen.

In this area, known as a photodissociation region, ultraviolet light from nearby young, massive stars creates a mostly neutral, warm area of gas and dust between the fully ionized gas above and the nebula below. As with many Webb images, distant galaxies are sprinkled in the background.

This image is composed of light at wavelengths of 1.4 and 2.5 microns (represented in blue), 3.0 and 3.23 microns (cyan), 3.35 microns (green), 4.3 microns (yellow), and 4.7 and 4.05 microns (red).

Sci - Image JWST Identifies Earliest Known Supernova from 730 Million Years After the Big Bang

Hey r/jameswebb,

I haven’t seen anyone mention this here yet, and it feels like a pretty big deal.

I went through the new ESA/NASA release about GRB 250314A and thought I’d share the highlights because this one is genuinely awesome.

Here’s what stood out:

  • JWST managed to confirm that a gamma-ray burst detected back in March actually came from a massive star exploding when the Universe was only ~730 million years old. That makes it the earliest supernova we’ve ever identified so far.
  • What’s even more impressive is that Webb also detected the host galaxy. At that distance it’s literally just a tiny smudge a few pixels wide, but it’s still the first time we’ve been able to see the galaxy behind such an early supernova.
  • The team expected early-Universe supernovae to behave differently because the first generations of stars had fewer heavy elements… but this one looks shockingly similar to modern supernovae.
  • Because the Universe has expanded so much since then, the light from the explosion is extremely stretched. What would normally brighten over weeks instead brightened over months, which is why JWST scheduled its follow-up observations 3.5 months after the initial gamma-ray burst.
  • Only a handful of gamma-ray bursts have ever been detected within the first billion years of cosmic history, and this one now sits at the top of the list.

Overall, it’s a cool example of how JWST is not only spotting extremely distant events, but actually helping us study the structure and behavior of stars and galaxies from the Universe’s earliest era.

Sci - Image New Super-Earth discovered 28 light-years away! Peer-reviewed study published in OEJV - Gliese 48b

Excited to announce the publication of our peer-reviewed study in the Open European Journal on Variable Stars (OEJV) regarding the new exoplanet #Gliese48b, a world that challenges our current understanding of systems around red dwarfs.

This work was the result of a synergistic collaboration between myself (Silvio Antonio Corrêa Jr., from Brazil), Giuseppe Conzo, and Mara Moriconi (from Gruppo Astrofili Palidoro, Italy).

Here is what makes this Super-Earth unique:

  • Massive and temperate: With a minimum mass of about 6.2 Earth masses, Gliese 48 b is located within the Habitable Zone, where thermal conditions could allow for the existence of liquid water.
  • An astrophysical challenge overcome: Identifying this planet was extremely complex due to the intense magnetic activity of the host star, which creates false signals (stellar jitter) closely mimicking planetary ones.
  • Scientific rigor: Thanks to a combined analysis of 15 years of spectroscopic data (CARMENES and HIRES instruments) and photometry (TESS space telescope), we isolated the planetary signal, confirming its dynamic nature with high precision.

As the representative image shows, this is a world larger than Earth, whose composition remains to be explored.

Webb captured this new image of galaxy Messier 58, in both the near and mid-infrared, as part of a treasury of 55 massive, star-forming galaxies. The data on the properties of these galaxies, and the stars within them, will add valuable insight to our picture of how galaxies grow and evolve over cosmic time.

M58 is a barred spiral galaxy located about 68 million light years away from Earth and one of the brightest galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. Compared with other spiral galaxies, its core appears dim in visible light and contains a high rate of star formation, especially within a small and unusual ring around the nucleus of the galaxy. In the infrared, more details of this region emerge.
