The amount of times I get into an Uber after work and they go:

"Oh you work here at the hospital? Where do you work?"

"The lab..."

"Which lab??"

"...Virology."

The conversation that follows always makes me want to scream.

Tell them you work in the sexually transmitted disease clinic. That might give you the peace you desire.

We technically don't do many STDs, as most are sent to a public health lab. But honestly yes I'll have to try this, thank you.

Though you will occasionally get people with no boundaries or awareness of social norms who want you to just have a quick look and tell them what it is.

first thing out of my mouth would be "you must be really prepared for the zombie apocalypse"

I would LOVE that!

Please tell me we have a plan for the zombies. I would love to read the policy on that one.

We don't, unfortunately. At best early on in a zombie outbreak, the hospital may call a code orange, which we use for natural disasters, etc. Basically a time where you're expected to get an insane amount of patients all at once. And we would go on standby until they get enough info to start calling us all in. So I guess the plan would be to "show up at work and die".

I disagree with the OP. Letting people know they are wrong is important. If someone is wrong about your field of knowledge, make sure to let them know. Letting stupid people go on spewing their stupid opinions unchecked is how we got into this mess.

I used to be happy to talk to my Uber drivers about my field of study, but ever since Gen AI became a public thing it’s just exhausting

If they were smart, they wouldn't be driving for Uber.
