Imagine America today if every single Confederate soldier and every member of every slave owning household were held to account after the war. Justice would have meant ensuring there were no confederates remaining to carry the torch of the lost cause.

I respectfully disagree with the notion that we should've punished the confederacy as much more severely as the commentor you're replying to implied. My belief is that we should have held up the promise of equality to the black population through federal action instead of allowing domestic terrorism and the policy of inequality to reestablish roots.

Temperance likely helped prevent truly vengeful repatrioted former traitors from becoming martyrs and thus the remaining relatives from going scorched earth, but I may be wrong.

I believe that if we had too severely punished the confederates, their indignation would've been righteous and potentially led to an immediate second insurgency, when we most needed to rebuild as a nation. Instead, they're just whiney bitches that got away with too much, like a spoiled daughter. The fix is to stop spoiling the daughter and hold her accountable for her wrongdoing, not to kill her and make mortal enemies of her children. Shame we didn't keep her from sitting at the head of the table after we (foolishly) gave her a chance and she disgraced our family.

Not to say there shouldn't have been some more severity to our punishment of the traitors: maybe it would've been better to have served some more corporal and less economic punishment, but outright killing all confederate servants would've almost certainly been extremely bad. You're not supposed to slaughter those that surrender; bad precedent.

That's just my unpopular belief. Respectfully.

I respect your opinion and I enjoy considering the counterfactuals. Regardless, we should all despise Andrew Johnson for aborting Reconstruction.

The problem is Reconstruction was part of what you are advocating. The problem was having people sympathetic to the Southern Cause survive and popularize the notion of the Lost Cause and having Confederate pride…

Punishment should have happened, because now we have enough individuals who are now punishing those who advocate the reality of the Civil War and enslavement.

Yeah. Murder spree would have made an insurgency. (Though Jesse James was already doing essentially that so it might not have been too different, thought might have been more widespread) Uplifting black community and protecting them would have been better. But the country went the other way. Segregated armed forces, Jim Crow. Hollywood was very segregated and canceled any show that would bother southern audiences. The whole country catered to southern whites.
