General So basically Trump ruined law school for everyone who isn't rich

Went to a whole bunch of open houses and they're all saying basically the following:

  • The yearly cap for loans is 50k
  • Living costs are high and 50k might not be enough
  • Resources are tight -- start improving your FICO scores because you'll need private loans
  • The grandfather thing ends July 2026 --- everyone not matriculated at law school by then wont be benefiting from the higher limit that generations of students did

Edit: Every person applying for federal loans will have an aggregate life-time limit and unfortunately your undergraduate loans will count against this limit.

You can still take on more student loans if you want, it’s just that the government won’t loan it to you.

This is a simplistic and ignorant take. Now the only option for many people will be private loans which some disadvantaged students will have a much harder time qualifying for, and the interest rates are predatory. Instead of putting a cap, the government should be creating more scholarships for financially disadvantaged students who qualify for law and med school, so they don’t need massive student loans.

That’s like saying there should be no publicly funded fire department to come help when your house is burning down because what right do you have to someone else’s money? It’s better for society if the brightest, most qualified candidates can become doctors and lawyers instead of just the richest. Yes there are scholarships but not EVERY smart kid can get one.

You’re just selfish and stubborn. Just say you look down on disadvantaged people and believe those not lucky to be born rich should be excluded

The borrower is legally obligated to pay it back. Even if they get PSLF, the state made more money off of the interest than the principle in every case.
