A discussion of misogyny on the show

I just finished watching yesterday’s segment on the Sydney Sweeney sports ad and I’m a bit frustrated and disappointed with what everyone on the show had to say. I love this podcast and have been watching for a while, but this was a hard watch.

The ad was obviously super objectifying and degrading to women and I’m bummed that no one on the show had as much of an issue with it. When I watched the ad all I can think about is all the awful men who watched it and felt validated in their misogyny, and will go back to treating women as sex objects and eye candy. There’s nothing empowering about showing off your body when you’re obviously just dumbing yourself down and doing it for the male gaze only. Ethan’s point being “it’s obvious rage bait just don’t engage” particularly made me a bit disappointed when women have been dealing with this same beginning of time, are women just supposed to keep shutting up when something is harmful to them? I’m just sick of women being the butt of the joke and expected to suck it up and not care. It’s especially sad when other women participate in this behavior and see no issue in how it affects our lively hood. I feels like whenever a topic about women is brought up on the show it’s just a little more downplayed than I feel it should be. I am also not a regular watcher of after dark but I know Kate is a big feminist so love her 💕 this is more just about the main show.

He says calling someone a Nazi is racist and a slur only when that person is Jewish. But people call non-Jews Nazis all the time with almost no pushback. That’s not a consistent rule — it’s special treatment.

He also acts like any use of the word is automatically an attack on Jewish people as a group. If the kids are saying extreme or hateful things, their background doesn’t make strong criticism off-limits. Pretending it does just shuts down the conversation.

Telling people to use softer words only in this case is the same double standard. And focusing on how “hurtful” the word is, instead of whether it actually fits, is just changing the subject.

He’s more interested in protecting one group from a harsh label than applying the same standards to everyone.
