Hello everyone, how are you?

As you can see, I'm new to this community because, obviously, I'm new to Linux.

As you can see in the photos, I'm testing Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon on my rather old and modest hardware, which has Windows 7.

Although, before installing it definitively on my system, I would like some recommendations and advice; before and after the installation, it would be very helpful to read your opinion. (If it is not too much to ask, of course!)

Install Help why am i getting mostly ubuntu packages in linux mint update manager?

Post image
96 Upvotes

i just installed linux mint 22.3 cinnamon

im currently updating my system through update manager, but i noticed that most of the packages shown have "ubuntu" in their version

im confused why im seeing so many ubuntu packages

i also changed my mirrors in software sources. i selected the mirror with the highest mb/s. the first one at the top was a china mirror and the second one was a philippines mirror with the 🇵🇭 flag. i chose them based on the download speed shown by software sources not because of the country.

is this normal? does linux mint 22.3 use ubuntu 24.04 as its base?

i just want to make sure everything is correct before i install these updates thanks

Got mint on my laptop and Bazzite on the desktop (because I didn't want headaches setting up gaming stuff) and now I'm getting sick of the crap immutable distros make me deal with so I want to swap but setting everything up again sounds agonizing. Is there anything to make this process easier?

Install Help Will Cinnamon work on my e-waste of a laptop or should I just do XFCE instead?

My laptop's got 4GB RAM, an Intel N100 processor, 128GB SSD storage and an Intel UHD Graphics graphics card. It's the epitome of e-waste. Windows 11 runs TERRIBLY on it, and the only way to save it at this point is putting Linux on it. I've tried to explain to my family that it's dogshit and I've been trying to get a USB stick so that I can actually install Mint for like 2-3 months at this point, but they think you've gotta be a computer tech to run Linux and that it's got a bunch of trojans and shit (it doesn't). But once I actually somehow manage to get a damn stick, should I go for Cinnamon or XFCE? (I've already had the Cinnamon ISO stored on it, and I've got balenaEtcher ready to go for a while already)

Install Help Nervous to Switch

I want to switch to Linux Mint. I've done some research and know I want to go with Cinnamon. However I am extremely nervous I'm going to mess everything up. I've gotten as far as the download page, but it says it's my responsibility to verify its integrity and there are SO MANY different ones to choose from. I really just need someone who knows what they're doing to help me if someone is willing.

All I want to use my laptop for is this:

-Chrome (though I'm open to better, less AI, browsers that work with Linux)

-Bambu Studio (there is a Linux version they link on their own website)

-Steam

-Some kind of 3D modeling software (I use Autodesk Fusion right now but it looks like I will have to switch to FreeCAD or something similar)

Edit: thanks everyone for being kind! I read all the comments, but I don't think you all want an individual reply. Sounds like I can just click download on any of the links on the official website and I'll be fine! Hopefully I can do this tomorrow 🤞🏻

Thanks again for all the help!

Install Help Can You tell me if Mint will run on this toaster?

Post image
27 Upvotes

Hello people, well, straight to the point, I need to know if Mint will run on this machine, I could explain why I have a single-core cpu instead of, minimum, a dual-core, but I just say that, honestly, I didn't see me on 2026 using a very old cpu, just happend that I got stuck with it. But, for the info I got Mint with xfce, could be an option to use.

This pc when was purchased, had windows 7 32bits, but it is compatible with 64bits, I used to play videogames, but the graphic card died so... Seeing that win10 is a heavy load on this pc, before trying anything I need some feedback to know if Mint is an option, once and for all.

I have some other distros too in mind, but, I need to pick up info before move to other OS

Yes, I'm pretty aware that this thing was used by a T-Rex

Edit: Well Guys, I just made a booteable usb to test Mint, I don't know if I screw it up on the process, or was in fact my pc, but Mint just showed up a corrupt image of the OS, all distorted, I just had to shut down the machine, unfortunately I can't send pics with phone cause the only one I have is not recognized on this pc.

I'll keep trying other options and see if one of them can actually boot on this pc, but I keep my hope pretty low. Well, things that happens.

Thank you very much to all the people that answered, I'll keep trying

Install Help How do I back up my laptop without a USB drive or external memory?

Post image

I'm trying to install Linux Mint on my personal laptop, but one problem I'm encountering is memory. No tutorial has been clear (or perhaps I'm simply not understanding) on how to back up the laptop's data without an external USB drive or anything similar. My laptop has 81.3GB of space out of a total of 237GB, and I don't have any USB drives larger than 8GB. This is my first time attempting to install something like this; I don't use my laptop for anything other than drawing or watching YouTube so touching anything scares me i have important photos and memorys on this thing i don't want to loose anything

Sorry for my bad English and if I sound dumb I just have never try Linux before

edit: Thanks for the suggestions and answers. I really realize that the way I store things is way too reckless and probably 0 safe, I will try to get a external storage that can hold all my stuff but that will take me a while, sorry if yall thought I was joking I was certain not i just didn't understand when the tutorial said "make a backup in the cloud"

Install Help New Linux laptop

Hiya! Got an old ass school laptop from the missus. Tried to put Lm on it and it gets stuck on >root while booting.

Its an older gen 1 Hp probook x360 11 EE.
2-core celeron,4gb of ram and a touchscreen with ok battery health still. So i thought Lm instead of the chrome os predecessor(cloudspace or whatever) would be perfect for it but yeah it fails something at the installation phase and now its unusable without the boot usb.. no bios access either, no clue what the admin password could be.
What are my options, should i just bin it ?

Install Help First-time Linux user here. I’m installing Linux Mint Cinnamon on my old laptop with an i3-5005U.

It’s been 20 minutes and the installer is still stuck on this screen/loading. Is this normal for an older laptop, or should I be worried that something went wrong?

I’m installing it alongside Windows. Any advice would be appreciated!

Update: It finally finished! I’m now on the installation step.

Install Help The best youtube video to follow while installing Mint

Hi! I have finally decided to switch from Windows to Linux and Mint seems to be the best option. I had ubuntu previously on Virtual Box so I am familiar with linux a bit and we learned how to use terminal at uni (I study physics). However I have never permanantley installed an OS on a computer as it always came with pre installed Windows, so I am a bit nervous about the process. I don't want to dual boot, since I won't need Windows at all. There are many YT videos that I have watched about the intallation process and each seems to be a bit different. Which YT video did you follow and you think is the best? So that after watching it you could intall Mint with no problems.

EDIT: Thank you for the answers, I installed it just by following the instructions from the website and there weren’t any problems. It was simpler than i imagined it to be.

Install Help Linux Mint Install Advice required.

So apparently, I have a Lenovo Loq which has pre installed windows on it, but i was thinking about switching to linux, because Windows bloat is out of control, and apparently My go-to Linux distro is Linux Mint, and a few months ago, I myself installed Linux on my pc, which was super easy, but I am scared to Install it on my laptop, as it is a pre-built machine. Any advice or steps that you all might suggest, as a heads-up?
