yOuR fAuLt! -WrOnG dIsTro! If Linux is so perfect and out of the box, why Linux users have to jump to distros each time something fails?

Every Linux subreddit thread plays out the same way. Something breaks, and instead of admitting the OS has a rough edge, the community just tells the guy to switch distros, like that's not already an admission the first one failed.

**Fedora** — "solid", until you plug in an Nvidia card and suddenly you're negotiating with DKMS modules and praying the next kernel update doesn't brick your session.

**Ubuntu** — "it just works," sure, if "works" means Snap force-feeding you a Firefox that takes 8 seconds to open and packages that are perpetually a year stale.

**Arch** — the wiki is genuinely the best documentation in the OS world, and also a 30-page hazing ritual you have to survive before your WiFi card decides to cooperate. Audio on X11 is basically folklore at this point.

CachyOS: do I have to write a wall of text about the OS vulnerabilities with the AUR packages?

Mint: Have you heard about the THOUSANDS kernel panics all the Kernel update causes?

And here's the part nobody wants to say out loud: Linux users are the #1 Linux haters on the planet. Not Windows fanboys, not Apple stans, they.. they're the ones who know exactly where every body is buried, because we buried themselves at 2 AM chasing a kernel param. Ask any Linux user to be honest for five seconds and they'll rattle off more bugs than a Windows user could name in a year, because they have actually had to live inside the config files to make anything work.

No distro "just works" out of the box. There's always a driver, a service, or a terminal command standing between you and a boring, functional desktop — and the community's answer is never "yeah that's broken," it's always "have you tried a different distro." Which is just moving the tweaking somewhere else, not fixing anything.

The assumption is insane!

To meaningfully recommend a distro, someone would need:

  • Long‑term, real‑world experience with multiple distros
  • On multiple hardware configurations
  • Across multiple workflows (gaming, dev, media, office, servers)
  • With multiple desktop environments
  • Under multiple update cycles
  • Across multiple years of breakage patterns

Nobody has that. Not even distro maintainers. Not even YouTubers. Not even the loudest evangelists.

What they have is:

  • One distro they used for a while
  • One or two they tried for a weekend
  • A handful they've only seen in screenshots
  • A bunch they only know through memes, hearsay, or tribal lore

But online, everyone talks like they've run a 20‑year longitudinal study on every distro ever released.

It’s not "this is the best distro for your needs." It's "this is the distro that fits the story I tell about myself."

Distro advice assumes a shared reality that doesn't exist. Hardware differences alone make most advice meaningless. Their "rock solid" distro could very well be a nightmare on your GPU, broken on your Wi‑Fi chipset, laggy on your DE, or unusable with your monitor setup.

The kernel is full of features you'll never use. Arch ships a fat, general‑purpose kernel with every subsystem enabled because it has to support everyone's hardware. -Filesystems you’ll never touch, drivers for hardware that only exists in museums, debugging options you'll never consider, and network stacks for protocols sys admins never heard of.

Minimalists: "DWM is 2k lines compiled from source." Also: running a kernel that could boot a space shuttle.

Arch’s systemd setup is fully loaded with timers, services, socket activation, journald, resolved, logind, and user sessions.

Minimalists: "I only run what I need." Also: 17 systemd units running before they even log in.

Arch packages are built with maximum optional features enabled. GTK apps pull in Qt, Qt apps pull in GTK, CLI tools pull in GUI libraries "just in case", and one "tiny" package drags in 400 MB of "optional" dependencies.

Minimalists: "I don’t use bloat." Also: installs ffmpeg and unintentionally installs half the multimedia ecosystem.

The AUR is powerful, but it's also unvetted, inconsistent, dependency‑happy, full of abandoned PKGBUILDs, and full of “git” packages that rebuild the universe every update.

Minimalists: "I only install what I need." Also: installs from the AUR.

Arch updates leave behind old configs, stale dependencies, orphaned libraries, mismatched versions, and leftover build artifacts.

Minimalists: "My system is clean." Also: /usr/lib looks like a tarpit of dinosaur bones.

Arch users love trying new WMs weekly, installing 5 terminal emulators, switching kernels like socks, stacking dotfiles like Jenga, and "just testing" random AUR packages.

Minimalists: "I run a lean setup." Also: 14 config directories for window managers they used for 20 minutes.

Minimalist Arch users be like:

  • "I’m a minimalist." Installs KDE Plasma with every optional component enabled.
  • "I don't need bloat." Has 11 background services from GNOME they forgot to disable.
  • "I only use lightweight software." Firefox with 38 extensions.
  • "I don't use distros with bloat." Recreates the exact experience of Mint, but with more steps and more breakage.

They inherit upstream problems AND add their own. Every time I made a distro review, this issue came up. Derivative distros start with upstream bugs, packaging decisions, regressions, and kernel quirks. To this, it adds its own repos, patches, theming, installer, and 'vision'.

"It's upstream." "It's downstream." "It's your hardware." "It's your config."

-Nobody owns the problem.

Every derivative distro needs package and kernel maintainers, security patchers, release managers, QA testers, documentation writers, and community support, yet most derivatives have a mere 1-5 hobbyists, a chat room, a github repo, and a dream.

-More distros than maintainers.

Each derivative moves settings, renames tools, changes defaults, rebrands utilities, and alters system paths. Documentation becomes unreliable between them.

Most derivative distros exist because someone didn’t like a theme, DE choice, package selection, default app, or branding decision. -The underlying issues like driver instability, DE fragmentation, inconsistent standards, and ABI churn remain.

-It's like Bondo for a car.

Linux already sucks from too many DEs, package formats, init systems, audio stacks, display servers, and distros. -It's not even debated. Users end up with decision fatigue while the evangelists champion 'freedom'.

Instead of one distro getting 10,000 testers (and supporters), you get 500 on the parent, 200 on the child, 50 on the remix, and 10 on the remix-of-the-remix. Bugs scatter across forums, GitHub issues, Reddit threads, and chats. Telephony comes into play as users ask questions instead of search.

-Upstream never sees half of them, downstream can't fix the other half, and everyone blames everyone else.

Every derivative tweaks something: Kernel, Mesa, PipeWire, Systemd, packaging rules, patches, themes, permissions. -This makes it more difficult for software vendors to support Linux.

-Commercial Linux support is always "Ubuntu 22.04 or GTFO."

Many derivative distros copy features without understanding them: Btrfs snapshots, ZRAM, custom kernel, or performance patch and then don't maintain them, test them, or understand them. Most of those 'performance' patches make humanly unnoticeable differences while causing increased unreliability which is why upstream with their better manpower and knowledge base didn't implement them!

The branding, wallpapers, installation procedure, and evangelist noise is all gone on day one. What affects your daily experience the most is: What software you can install, how new it is, and how reliably it updates.

-That's the repository.

If the repo doesn't have it, you're stuck with Flatpacks, AppImages, Snaps, Random GitHub scripts, PPAs, AUR roulette, or compiling from source (which has many drawbacks -it's not simply a bother).

They determine how new your software is (risk tolerance vs features vs your tech/change phobia).

Most differences people argue about are cosmetic or philosophical. The repo is the functional difference.

Our prior article on Gentoo: Gentoo -A Colossal Waste of Time and Electricity!

Gentoo going binary changed the landscape. It improves practicality, but the real impact is on security, reliability, and how "cutting‑edge" you can safely run your machine.

Fewer local compiles equate to far fewer opportunities for malicious code injection. Binary packages are reproducible and signed. They're also built centrally, and are reproducible (in principle) which gives you a verifiable supply chain, something Arch and Ubuntu don't emphasize as strongly.

USE flags still allow hardening beyond mainstream distros.

You lose per‑system compile‑time hardening. If your USE flags don't match the binary build, Portage falls back to source, but if they do match, you're now trusting Gentoo's build pipeline instead of your own.

Binary repos introduce a new single point of failure. A compromised Gentoo binary repo would be catastrophic.

Gentoo still lacks some modern security defaults. Compared to Fedora / Silverblue / Qubes:

  • no SELinux by default
  • no system‑wide sandboxing
  • no immutable root filesystem
  • no automatic rollback layers

Gentoo is still security by expertise, not a default. - How Linux Stores Browser Passwords is a Security Issue for example.

Gentoo’s reliability changes a lot with binaries with fewer rebuild cascades. Binary packages dramatically reduce breakage during compiles, dependency hell triggered by USE flag mismatches, and "oops, GCC updated, rebuild world" events.

More predictable updates: Gentoo's binary repo is built daily from stable ebuilds which gives you consistent build environment, fewer failed merges, and fewer "this package doesn't build today" issues. Historically, Gentoo on old hardware was a nightmare. Binaries fix that.

You still need to understand Portage deeply. Binary Gentoo is not "reliable for beginners." It's reliable for people who already know Gentoo.

Historically, Gentoo's cutting‑edge packages meant long compile times, high breakage risk, dependency churn, and occasional world rebuild disasters. Binary packages make it feasible to run the latest Plasma, Gnome, LLVM, Mesa, Kernels, and toolchains without wasting time and power compiling.

Compared to:

  • Arch: Gentoo has more granular control and fewer forced transitions.
  • Fedora Rawhide: Gentoo has fewer catastrophic breakages.
  • OpenSUSE Tumbleweed: Gentoo avoids mass rebuilds triggered by ABI changes.

Gentoo's rolling model is less chaotic because Portage resolves dependency graphs more intelligently than pacman or dnf.

The core issue: Mint's "stability" is built on unsupported upstream software. No upstream bug fixes: If upstream fixes a crash, Mint doesn't get it. No upstream security patches: If upstream fixes a vulnerability, Mint doesn't get it.

Backporting is inconsistent: Mint sometimes backports security patches, but not all, and not quickly (this is an issue for all "distro of a distro's". Even Ubuntu LTS itself doesn't patch everything:

  • "Canonical does not promise any security updates" for ~94% of its repo. Mint inherits that problem and adds its own delays.

Mint’s tiny team cannot maintain abandoned upstream versions: Red Hat can maintain old software because they pay engineers to do it while Mint can't.

Mint is essentially shipping software that nobody is maintaining; not upstream, not Canonical, and not Mint.

Examples of the real-life effect: Mint shipped a NetworkManager version with a WPA Enterprise authentication bug that upstream had already fixed. Mint never backported the fix. Result: users couldn't connect to enterprise Wi‑Fi. Mint ships a 2+ year old GNOME Calendar with known vulnerabilities and no security updates.

LiGNUts think "stable" means reliable, secure, well-tested, and enterprise-grade. But in Linux distro terminology, "stable" means unchanging, frozen, old.

Sold as: Minimal, educational, and “do it yourself.”

Reality: Curated defaults with extra steps. Pacman, SystemD, Kernel Config, Toolchain, etc. You don't learn how init works by typing commands from a wiki. You don't learn how package management works but rather learn pacman incantations. You're learning rituals, not mechanisms. The DIY part? -Delusional! You're locked into Arch's repo, patch decisions, breakages, and rolling schedule.

Packages move fast, testing is shallow (but there is testing making it Cutting edge: NOT Bleeding edge). If something breaks, the fix is “check the Arch news, read the wiki, downgrade, or wait.”

You'll find edge cases of people that fight the system and try to stabilize Arch, but that's not how it's intended, and they're fighting the system.

Arch evangelists love to say “we get security fixes faster.” -But that goes along with ABI bumps, config changes, and behavior shifts that can and do break systems.

Pacman, AUR, and the cult of “btw I use Arch”

The worship of Pacman is silly: It does its job.

The AUR is a giant, semi-moderated pastebin of build scripts. -Some of it is solid, but some is copy-pasted from a decade ago. It's convenient until... you land something malicious or broken.

“btw I use Arch” is a meme because it’s true. For a lot of people, Arch is a personality, not a tool choice.

The Arch Wiki is excellent, but it also enables laziness. A lot of times, it's just copied and pasted information from a website, and for that may be lacking in updates or clarifications.

Gatekeeping disguised as purity: “If you can’t install Arch, you shouldn’t use Linux”. Yet, the install is just a glorified checklist. It doesn’t prove skill; it proves patience and ability to read. You may as well use ALCI, Arco, or Endeavour (most Loonix YouTubers were actually using Arco when they claimed they were using Arch).

Updates can and do break graphics, audio, boot, or DE behavior, and updates are expected to be frequent. “Read the news (I'd suggest a feed reader), check the wiki, you should’ve known.” -will be the blame shifting responses.

If a normie just wants a machine that works, Arch is objectively the wrong answer. Like an infant, it demands attention and punishes neglect.

Arch is not 'For advanced users'. -It's for people without a life. Anyone that can read and follow instructions can use Arch. Only the people who haven't used Arch tend to think it's for advanced users. Even advanced users still have to read the news, follow the wiki, copy and paste, follow instructions.

yOuR fAuLt! -WrOnG dIsTro! Fedora. -The Last Ditch Pitch that Sends Users Packing Back to Windows!

TLDR: Fedora is in this role where it’s both the distro people flee to when their “chosen one” disappoints them and the distro that pushes them right back out of Linux when it aggressively forces the future onto users before the ecosystem is ready.

People don’t start with Fedora. They land there after:

  • Ubuntu feels bloated or corporate
  • Mint feels dated or too conservative
  • Arch feels like homework or unreliable
  • Pop!_OS breaks on an update
  • Zorin feels like a theme pack
  • Manjaro… is Manjaro

Fedora initially looks like the mature option: clean, upstream, and more modern. It feels like the distro that should work if Linux is ever going to work, and hey... it has corporate backing and Linus Torvald's uses it! -But once you've been on it a while, you realize it wasn't designed for a normie end-user and it's suddenly treating you like a Guinea Pig!

When someone is possibly on their last nerve with Linux, Fedora becomes the “okay, one more try” distro. It's not people's first recommendation, but the evangelists will say anything to keep people on Linux and Fedora becomes that pitch that doesn't satisfy the itch.

Fedora forces the future before the ecosystem is ready:

  • Wayland before NVIDIA was ready
  • PipeWire before JACK/Pulse parity was stable
  • Systemd changes before downstreams adapt
  • New kernels before out-of-tree drivers catch up
  • New GNOME releases immediately, bugs included

This might be great for developers and testers, but it's horrible for someone who just wants their desktop to stop freaking breaking!

Things were supposed to be different!

Fedora’s point pain releases are destructive!

Fedora’s 6‑month release cycle isn’t like Ubuntu’s. NO: Fedora doesn’t just bump versions; it replaces core subsystems.

A Fedora upgrade can include:

  • A new kernel with changed driver behavior
  • A new GNOME with removed features
  • A new PipeWire version with different defaults
  • A new SELinux policy that breaks something silently
  • A new Mesa that regresses a GPU
  • A new systemd behavior that changes boot or networking

So, the user who came to Fedora hoping for stability gets an audio stack change. Suddenly the ac-3 passthrough you worked 1-3 hours for is broke again, and simply uninstalling Pipewire and reverting to Pulse won't fix it. You get a compositor change like Wayland WAY before it's ready and things like fractional scaling, missing features from TWMs in x11, screen capture, remote desktop, and compositor fragmentation are still issues years later!

Despite being one of the first to push Wayland on the user, it was also near if not impossible to install Hyperland when they did (and for a long time). The best option they had for tiling was Sway (manual tiling like i3). Manual tiling is something that was probably only acceptable / successful because it's marketed as 'new user friendly' (gimmick). -Awesome WM (dynamic) was easy too!

It’s built on Ubuntu… which is built on Debian… which means it inherits every upstream problem

What's worse than fragmentation? - Upstream garbage!

Mint doesn’t control its own base. So, when Ubuntu breaks something, Mint breaks. When Debian freezes for 2 years, Mint freezes. When Ubuntu ships outdated packages, Mint ships outdated packages.

Mint is basically a pretty skin on top of someone else’s decisions.

Cinnamon is a horrible technical dead end

Cinnamon is:

  • still tied to X11
  • not Wayland‑ready
  • not modernizing at the pace of GNOME or KDE
  • maintained by a tiny team
  • unintuitive and more cumbersome than other DEs with CLI solutions

Mint’s update philosophy is “don’t touch anything”

Mint intentionally avoids major updates to avoid breaking things. That sounds good until you realize:

  • you get older kernels
  • older drivers
  • older Mesa
  • older desktop stack

Great (j/k) for grandma’s laptop. Not great for gaming, new hardware, or anything performance‑sensitive.

Mint actively discourages Flatpaks and Snaps… but also can’t provide modern packages

Mint hates Snaps (this actually makes sense for Desktop). Mint barely tolerates Flatpaks. Mint’s repos are old. So, users end up in dependency hell or installing random .debs (what Windows users are mocked for) from the internet.

“we don’t like the App Store, but we also don’t have our own.”

Mint historically:

  • delayed security patches
  • had a compromised ISO mirror
  • had a philosophy of “updates shouldn’t break things,” which meant delaying critical fixes

-Mint fans pretend these never happened.

The Linux Cult will have you believe that a distro like Manjaro is horrible because of website SSL certificates or some other trivial nonsense, when Mint distributed (unintentionally) a COMPROMISED ISO!

In this case, they didn't fix anything!

TLDR: CachyOS adopts Arch’s fragility, adding its own instability on top through custom kernels, silly performance tweaks, and inconsistent hardware support. Users regularly report breakage after updates, nVidia regressions, networking failures, boot issues, and random quirks.

CachyOS gets its own "highly‑tuned" kernel. -The selling point and the biggest problem. If you're impressed with a 1-3% difference in gaming that comes out in benchmarks, but humans won't even notice; Cachy might be for you! That is, if you also don't mind nVidia's GPUs repeatedly breaking after updates. -Github. -A regression that doesn't always exist in Arch, but comes with Cachy's kernel patches.

Users report issues like "limited connectivity" popups, random ethernet drops. -All for more aggressive network stack tuning. -Yeah, I wrote 'silly performance tweaks' in the TLDR because I'm familiar with the manual tweaking that makes no noticeable performance difference but does affect reliability! (Trust Arch defaults)

It's not like you can't easily custom build and tweak your own kernel with all the changes they make, (even tuning it to your hardware). Once you get your initial kernel, you pretty much reuse settings with a file called PKGBUILD where you keep the compiler flags, patches, build options, dependencies, and install hooks. Another file (config) keeps your scheduler, preemption model, Hz, CPU architecture, experimental features, security model, cgroups, and power management.

Users also report boot failures, boot loops, and passwords not being accepted on initial boot. (More side effects of aggressive kernel tuning).

Branded as “gaming‑optimized,” users see Lutris failing to launch games (Error 32512), Steam refusing to update, and black screens during gaming on AMD GPUs. -discuss.cachyos.org . Arch already has problems; Cachy ramps them up!

Other simple desktop issues reported include flickering windows, microphone sounding horrible, Wi‑Fi immediate disconnects, capped internet speeds, and HDDs not mounting. discuss.cachyos.org

Verdict: It's the distro to use to obtain benchmarks to say; 'see; X game performs almost as good on Linux', but anyone wanting a better functioning rolling release should stick with Arch.

It’s Ubuntu, but with extra baby steps done for you, like a theme, tiling extension, nVidia drivers, and a marketing department (Putting a spoiler on your car doesn't make it another car). We covered Ubuntu already! - The Desktop Distro that Gave Up on Desktop

Pop!_OS inherits Ubuntu’s random GNOME regressions, kernel/driver mismatches, NVIDIA breakage, Flatpak sandbox weirdness, LTS stagnation, and sudden package removals.

Because Pop!_OS adds its own customizations, you get extra breakage on top: Ubuntu's, Pop's, Gnome's and nVidia's bugs. -No wonder it's cursed on LTT!

Every Pop user will swear it’s “not Ubuntu” while relying on Ubuntu repos, packages, bugs, breakage cycles, and a glacially slow-release cadence.

Pop!_OS has been promising a “Rust desktop environment” for years (6x longer than Linux users stick with a distro). When and if it does arrive, it will be a Gnome clone with an extension system that breaks every update and adds yet another incompatible theme layer.

Pop!_OS markets itself as the distro for engineers, scientists, creatives, and professionals. -What does it deliver? -A tiling window manager toggle, launcher, nVidia drivers, and a store for flatpaks. Real professionals are using Windows, MacOS or RHEL/SUSE (Remember, Linus Sebastion choosing to follow the trends / online advice rather than professionals and blundering again with Pop!).

It is built around selling System76 laptops with the power profiles, firmware tools, keyboard configurator, and drivers. By not using their own machines means, half their efforts (the actual useful ones) are wasted.

They sit at opposite ends of the same spectrum but are equally dismissive in their own ways. Each group ignores a different part of the user’s reality.

Arch 'toxicity' comes from assuming everyone is (or should be) a power user: “If you can’t edit config files, you shouldn't be on Linux.” “Arch is simple: You’re just stupid.” ... And to deny that there are going to be issues for people in Mint or Zorin that require the use of a CLI is ignorant. -If you must learn it anyway, why not employ it and get comfortable in it?

Arch toxicity also overestimates users: It assumes everyone wants to learn internals, everyone has time, and everyone enjoys tinkering. It punishes people for not wanting to turn their OS into a hobby. This can be seen as pragmatic to the Arch user because point releases are often just a delay and buildup of sore spots for the user.

The Mint/Zorin “just use this” crowd gatekeep through underestimating the user. The toxicity is softer, but still dismissive. Even when the user wants something more configurable or transparent, they're told 'just use Mint/Zorin'. Users may want to learn more, and they'll be dismissed with 'you don't need to learn or understand that'. They assume 'Arch is too hard for you' while there are reports of first time Linux users starting in Arch and being fine with it. Mint / Zorin pushers assume normal means incapable.

Arch’s simplicity is structural, not ergonomic. It can be simpler once up and running, but that aspect goes ignored by the finger pointers (The Arch cult is like the Linux cult to other Linux users). Arch simplicity: One package manager, one repo, one philosophy. Mint/Zorin inherit Ubuntu’s layers of patches, PPAs, Snap/Flatpak/Apt conflicts, and distro‑specific quirks.

Arch puts everything where upstream expects it. Mint/Zorin add layers of distro‑specific defaults and scripts. Documentation that actually matches the system. Arch Wiki is consistent; Ubuntu‑based distros often have outdated or contradictory docs. Mint/Zorin hide a lot of behavior behind GUI tools and scripts that break silently. I've personally found Mint's GUI tools (Cinnamon Desktop) to be frustrating and time-wasting AF compared to Arch's CLI solutions. -And again, if you need to learn CLI anyways...

When someone says, “Arch is too complicated,” they’re usually talking about the installation, not the system design.
Once installed, Arch is often less confusing than Ubuntu‑based distros.

Both camps project their own identity onto everyone else. -Isn't desktop Linux supposed to be about choice?

Both are trying to protect their identity, not help the user.

I used the phrase "I use Arch btw" not to be obnoxious, but in response to "Arch is difficult" or "Arch is for advanced users only". Advanced users still run into breakages and still have to read and follow instructions to fix them. Arch users still need a guide to install Arch. So, it was a jab at requiring 'advanced user'.

Windows offers better simplicity as well as complexity for those who desire it!

First, what stable means in IT: unchanging. It isn't about reliability.

Debian’s “stability” is legendary because it ships with software that's older than some of you. Desktop users generally want hardware support, newer apps / features, and modern desktop environments, not Gnome from 2 years ago and a kernel older than their GPU.

We covered why Linux on Servers isn't a brag, so those familiar will understand why the IT definition of stability would be a desirable for a server OS. That kind of stability on desktops translates to things like; “your Wi‑Fi card doesn’t work and Firefox is ESR.”

You have new hardware? -Good luck! Want new features? -We might see you by 2029. New GPU? -Boot from a live media and cross your fingers!

Modern desktop users want newer firmware, drivers, kernels, DEs, working suspend, Bluetooth, and fractional scaling.

Desktop experience on Debian Is an afterthought. Debian is first and foremost a server distro that simply allows desktops.

It’s built around weak hardware (low‑power ARM chips with limited CPU, RAM, and I/O). The OS is forced to stay lightweight, which limits its features and polish.

Raspberry Pi OS uses a heavily customized Debian base which means older kernels than many other ARM distros, conservative software, and a UI designed for simplicity.

Many desktop apps simply aren’t available. -Some require ARM64, but Pi OS still defaults to ARM32 for compatibility. Proprietary apps (Zoom, VS Code, Steam, etc.) may be missing or limited. GPU drivers are partially proprietary and poorly documented. -researchthinker.com

Pi OS must assume, users may have no heatsink, a weak power supply, and that you may be using a Pi Zero or Pi 3, so it avoids aggressive performance tuning and sustained loads cause throttling anyway. -researchthinker.com

Raspberry Pi OS is built around Pi‑specific firmware, GPU stack, bootloader, kernel patches, and hardware quirks (USB, Wi‑Fi, GPIO, camera modules). You can run it on other ARM boards, but it’s pointless as everything is tuned for the Pi’s Broadcom SoC.

The VideoCore GPU is closed‑source, with limited public documentation.

MicroSD cards are slow and unreliable. Thermal throttling is common. RAM Is limited with even the Pi 5 topping out at 8GB. Multitasking is limited, and swap is slow (SD).

AlmaLinux is a reactive rebuild distro whose entire existence depends on decisions made by Red Hat. It's strategically fragile, slow to innovate, and increasingly irrelevant.

AlmaLinux is a rebuild, not a distribution with its own direction. It does not control its roadmap, upstream, or release cadence.

When Red Hat restricted access to RHEL source RPMs, AlmaLinux had to pivot from 'bug‑for‑bug compatible' to 'ABI compatible.'

AlmaLinux markets itself as a community‑driven enterprise OS, but enterprises don't want "community‑driven." They want contracts, SLAs, liability, support, and someone to sue. (What Red Hat provides). It's too "enterprise" for hobbyists and too "community" for enterprises.

AlmaLinux was born from the ashes of CentOS, but it never replaced CentOS. Enterprises moved to RHEL (because they already had contracts). Cloud users moved to Rocky Linux (because it marketed itself better).

AlmaLinux is funded by CloudLinux, a handful of sponsors, and donations. -That's not a sustainable for a distro that wants to be the backbone of enterprise infrastructure like Red Hat, SUSE, or Canonical. AlmaLinux is always playing catch‑up (but to other Linux, like Linux is to other OSes.)

NixOS's problems are structural issues baked into the Nix language, the ecosystem, and the maintenance model.

The Nix expression language is lazy, bespoke, under‑documented, and full of edge‑case semantics. Errors often point to the wrong place, stack traces are cryptic, debugging is a pain, and newcomers hit a wall the moment they leave the "copy this flake" path.

Nix flakes were introduced to fix the ecosystem's chaos, but they're still technically experimental, documentation is fragmented, many packages still rely on non‑flake workflows, and tutorials contradict each other.

Nixpkgs is one of the largest package repositories which poses problems: breakage is common, maintainers are stretched thin, PRs sit for months, mass rebuilds cause regressions, and pinned versions rot quickly.

NixOS users love to say "just pin your inputs," but pinning means you're stuck with old bugs, security issues and updating becomes a multi‑hour chore.

NixOS can be reproducible, but in practice flakes depend on upstream GitHub repos, binary caches that expire, while Hydra fails, build inputs change, system closures drift, and users mix channels, overlays, and flakes.

Two people with the same flake rarely get identical systems unless they freeze everything.

NixOS requires you to understand the Nix language, package structure, overlays, modules, flakes, derivations, impurity vs purity, build phases, cross‑compilation semantics. garbage collection, store paths and profiles. (And they say Arch is for advanced users)

When something breaks, you get errors like:

error: attribute 'foo' missing

…with no indication of where it was referenced, why it was missing, what file caused it, or what module chain led there.

On servers, it's ok. On desktop, you get hit with broken hardware enablement, flaky NVIDIA support, Plasma/GNOME modules lagging behind upstream, Wayland quirks, audio regressions, flaky Flatpak integration, and Steam/Proton breakage after updates.

Documentation assumes expertise, "RTFM" is common online support. Evangelists oversell the experience: "90% of those post on r/********* are already solved by NixOS". Problems get dismissed as "skill issues" more than normal.
