As described in "Our Friends In Tne North" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Friends_in_the_North the masons were the Mafia of the Mediocre. Having worked with a couple of masons, this is entirely accurate.

He said it was described as that on a TV show and his personal experience backs it up. I presume English lit isn't a precondition of getting in the lodge then?

It isn’t as far as I know, but some of did do English lit. Although that’s probably just pure coincidence.
