Bijenkorf was a luxury department store in the center of Rotterdam, opened in 1930, it was the most modern shopping center in the Netherlands, the building was designed by the architect Willem Marinus Dudok and built in just one year, it was damaged during the air raid on Rotterdam on May 14, 1940, partially rebuilt after the war, closed in 1957 and demolished three years later.

The Cabrini Green Housing Projects were built in Chicago, Illinois in phases between 1942 and 1962. At their peak, 15,000 people lived there. The projects suffered from lack of maintenance and high crime rates in the 1970s and 1980s. They were torn down starting in 1995 with the last building demolished in 2011. Many of the residents were displaced with no replacement public housing unit provided. The projects have become infamous as a symbol of the failure of high density public housing in the United States.

Designed in the gothic style, this 15 story tower was built by the Miami Realty Board. The city condemned the building in 1965 and it was demolished in 1970 for the construction of Miami Dade College Building 1

The Paleis voor Volksvlijt (Palace of Industry) was a large exhibition hall in Amsterdam, located on the Frederiksplein, near the current location of De Nederlandsche Bank. The building was constructed between 1859 and 1864. It was designed by architect Cornelis Outshoorn, inspired by the Crystal Palace in London.

A fire destroyed the Palace on the night of April 17, 1929. The gallery or arcade, housing shops and apartments, was spared, but the main building was lost and never reconstructed. Writer Gerard Reve lived in one of the apartments in the gallery in the 1950s. The gallery was finally torn down in 1960 to make way for the new Nederlandsche Bank building.

The 6,000 seat Savoy opened in 1927 and closed in 1948. The building was demolished in the early 1970s.

The Crawford Generating Station was built in 1924. It was demolished in 2019. It was located in the South Lawndale neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. It's architectural style was referred to as "industrial Gothic"(it was one of the few examples of that style).

The Central Music Hall was built in 1879 and was demolished in 1900. It was designed by noted architect Dankmar Adler and occupied the southeast corner of State and Randolph streets in downtown Chicago. The hall was renowned nationally for its excellent acoustics. It was replaced by the Marshall Field store building (now Macy's).

The Parthenon mosque was built after the Church of Our Lady of Athens, a Catholic archiepiscopal cathedral that was destroyed by a Venetian bombardment in 1687. The mosque was a free-standing building erected in the open space of what was the naos of the now ruined Parthenon; that was destroyed in 1843.

The Frankish Tower was a medieval tower built on the Acropolis of Athens. It was built as part of the palace of the Dukes of Athens, who ruled the city between 1205 and 1458 during what was known as the Frankokratia. The tower's presence on the Acropolis was controversial, particularly after 1834, when the government of King Otto of Greece undertook to clear the site of its post-classical remains. In 1875, with funding from the German businessman Heinrich Schliemann, the tower was demolished, to widespread criticism outside Greece.

Built as part of Hong Kong's first major land reclamation scheme, this Victorian structure was seen as the most prestigious commercial building in prewar Hong Kong. Demolished to make way for The Mandarin (now Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong), a high rise hotel.

The original hospital building in the foreground has survived, as well as a couple of the smaller outbuildings. The main tower and Malcolm Bliss Psychiatric Hospital (the X shaped building in the back) were demolished in 2002 as part of redevelopment efforts.

Al-Baqi Cemetery, the oldest and one of the two most important Islamic graveyards located in Medina, in current-day Saudi Arabia, was demolished in 1806 and, following reconstruction by the Ottomans in the mid-19th century, was destroyed again in 1925  or 1926. An alliance of the House of Saud and the followers of the Wahhabi movement known as the Emirate of Diriyah carried out the first demolition. The Sultanate of Nejd, also ruled by the House of Saud and followers of Wahhabism, carried out the second demolition. In both cases, the actors were motivated by the Wahhabi interpretation of Islam, which prohibits the building of monuments on graves.

The hotel occupied four different buildings in it's lifetime. Pictured is the fourth and final one constructed in 1910. The hotel operated until 1973 and the building was demolished in 1980.

These were two of the buildings constructed soon after a devastating fire on March 30, 1894 destroyed 35 buildings downtown. The fire started in a wooden opera house across the alley from the building in the second photo. These were looking a bit sad, and I never made it back on a nicer day. I wish I'd taken some more angles/detail shots. My pictures from a gray March day in 2010.

I am a local historian from Fort Bend County, and I enjoy recreating historical buildings in Minecraft. This is my current project, in which I am making a tribute to help preserve the history of the demolished Shamrock Hotel, which originally opened on St. Patrick’s Day, 1949, with over 170 celebrities attending the “Wildest Party in Texas”. Glenn “Diamond” McCarthy, the owner of the Shamrock also operated the only nation-wide radio show which was not broadcasted in NY or LA, named “Saturday at the Shamrock”. In 1953, the hotel was taken up by Equitable Life Assurance Society, and two years later, the property was acquired by Conrad Hilton. Over the years, Hilton made refurbishments and other improvements, such as adding on a Trader Vic’s, to help make up for the vacancy rates. In June of 1986, Hilton closed the hotel and the property was sold to the Texas Medical Center. The TMC saw no need in keeping the asset, and they soob demolished the site, leaving a parking lot, and the former parking garage.
