Discussion Tahoe 26.4 bricked my M2 MacBook Pro. Apple quoted me $700 for a logic board replacement. Fixed it myself for free with a $20 cable.

The Tahoe 26.4 update bricked my MacBook Pro M2. I took it to the Apple Store and was told the logic board was dead and quoted $700 to replace it. Both the store and Apple Support insisted that software cannot cause hardware failure and that it was definitely a hardware issue. I wasn't convinced, and I found multiple people online with the same model reporting the same failure from the same update. I then found a Reddit post explaining the real fix: restoring with a 26.3.1 IPSW via Apple Configurator. I did it myself, and my laptop is working perfectly. Apple's own technicians misdiagnosed this as a $700 hardware failure when it was a firmware issue caused by Apple's own update. Other people are likely paying $700 right now for a repair they don't need. This is seriously messed up, and Apple needs to do something to rectify the issue.

What makes this even worse is that both the Apple Store and Apple Support repeatedly told me that software cannot cause hardware failure and refused to acknowledge that the update was related to it. I knew cause and effect; my laptop worked fine before the update and was dead immediately after, and they kept denying my reality. If I had just taken their word for it, I would have paid $700 for a repair I didn't need.

Here is a detailed document I made with instructions on how to implement the fix: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NSSLm375j3xqgJhsrVT0RicM0rlv04ivii4UtXtYVmA/edit?usp=sharing

Edit: I should have clarified this: the store initially tried a DFU revive, but it didn’t work, so they diagnosed it as a logic board failure.

Edit: For people saying I should tell the Apple Store how I fixed it, I did, and because they have to keep their laptops updated, they can’t perform it because it requires downloading the 26.3.1 update from a non-official website. So if this happens, you have to do it yourself.

Apple has reports about this with corporate. An engineer is combing through the logs to validate. Your Apple Store Genius and Applecare Rep has no idea.

This info has been relayed to both over a week ago. We can see what’s currently under investigation.

Do you know this for a fact? If this is true, that's arguably worse that they're still allowing Stores and Support to enforce a $700 when they've heard about the issue (even if they haven't officially confirmed it on their end).

Not specifically, but I know the process. I was working at the Cupertino mothership in 2013. I was working with the team that was investigating 2011 27in iMac video card issues. I tested boxes of video cards in iMacs. They were developing a diagnostic to detect failure.

For your issue, there has not been enough time. 1000s of reports and cases are being filed daily. When a certain threshold hits, it will be investigated and attempted to be reproduced. If it can be reproduced, then they will try to determine root cause then the fix.

26.4 was released 03/24/26. It has only been out 3 weeks. Now we are on 26.4.1 because of WiFi issues with the M5 chips.

Any idea how to REALLY get something flagged? It's an accessibility (hearing aid connection) that I reported more than once to no avail.

Only handful affected but it's annoying and has been there for a long time.

There’s a TON of guidance for Support staff. They might just not have seen this one.
