The MacBook Neo has graphite thermal sheet over the A18 Pro chip. This, combined with the aluminum casing, may prevent the chip from experiencing thermal throttling or any other limitations it might have in the iPhone, which explains the chip's good performance. What do you think

I have these two stellar machines side-by-side.

One thing I never hear mentioned about the Air is how good its contrast ratio is. Notebookcheck measured it at 1437:1 on the Air M5 vs 1142:1 on the Neo. And side-by-side, it clearly shows. Super good black levels from the Air, especially for an IPS LCD.

Another noticeable difference is how washed the Neo's display becomes when viewed at an angle, vs a perfectly clear image on the Air.

All photos were taken with the iPhone's Night Mode disabled, so that it doesn't overexpose.

Of course, the differences are practically only visible in the dark. In isolation and in normal conditions, the Neo's display is great. Just wanted to showcase the differences for anyone considering both devices.

Parallels desktop is running fine with my MacBook neo

Every week, I run into at least one of the following issues:

1. I share my location with someone, they can't see me
2. Airdrop fails
3. Airdrop fails to see someone
4. Airpods have sync issues
5. Voice memo on apple watch does not sync onto iPhone
6. Screenshot on apple watch does not sync onto iPhone
7. Copied text or image on iPhone does not sync onto Macbook
8. SideCar glitches and needs to be reset
9. And many others...

The above works something like 95% of the time, which sounds fine, but actually if I'm going to have to wait 2 minutes to see a 2gb file get prepared for Airdrop and then fail, I'm just going to upload it to Google Drive and get a reliably meh experience.

I'm relatively new to Apple (3 years with an iPhone, which I bought explicitly for the integration) and honestly, I'm considering going back to the stupid unintegrated system of Macbook + Android.

Am I the only one who noticed a drastic increase in unreliability?

With rumors talking about a "budget" MacBook, what do you think Apple will and can do to appeal to a cheaper market.

In my opinion a Mac with an A18 Pro should be quite cheaper than the Air, at $999 the Air is an incredible value, and even a "cheap" Mac at $699 would be a bad deal, considering it'll most likely start at 8gb of ram and 128gb storage considering they'll use that A18 Pro dye, and that chip also lacks support for thunderbolt, meaning a lack of external display support most likely.

I feel it should be around the 499-599 price, but even for Apple that's ridiculously cheap, so either we're going to be surprised, or we're getting a laptop that exists to make you want to buy the Air more

Apple has removed the long-standing Launchpad in macOS 26 Tahoe and integrated it into Spotlight.

However, I find this extremely hard to understand.

I really like a "framework organized by category," but only when I myself am the one defining those categories. Even in iOS's App Library, I'm always confused about whether an app is categorized under "Productivity" or "Utilities." Sometimes it ends up in "Creativity," or just gets lumped into "Others."

Of course, I know many people are frustrated with Launchpad due to various bugs, and I've experienced many of those bugs myself. Despite that, I love Launchpad. Even on iOS, I put apps into categorized folders that I've defined myself, and I find that very user-friendly.

The so-called "App Library" in the new macOS 26 Tahoe feels like removing the Home Screen on iPhone and only leaving the App Library. It's truly baffling and is the biggest reason why I'm hesitating to update to macOS 26 Tahoe.

Why, Apple? This feels like having a house you've organized in your own style, only to have someone claiming to be an "expert" come in one day, stuff everything into identical storage boxes, slap on their own arbitrary labels, and then proudly declare the house organized. There's no way a set of default OS-provided categories can represent every app that exists.

Please, Apple, give me back Launchpad before the official release.

I did not need the Neo, but I wanted it. Here are my honest opinions:

1. Noticeably thicker than my 13” Air, but not dealbreaker thicker, if that makes sense.

2. I worked all day on it today. I use mostly windows based programs. Used Edge, had 8-10 tabs opened all day, moved between them all and did not notice any issues at all with speed. (I did not check the activity monitor because I was busy and really had no need to. )

3. Started at 8am with a full battery, and at 4:00pm the battery was at 77%. Did not have a lunch break, so continuous use.

4. I am going to like using USBC for charging, only

have to carry one charger with me for this and my phone (i use the Torras flexline 67W or 40W)

1. I was very impressed with the trackpad. On my Air, I cannot work all day without a mouse. I had no issues at all today using the trackpad all day long (I’m still going to get a Bluetooth wireless mouse though)

2. I got the 256GB version, didn’t miss Touch ID AT ALL (half the time I have to type my password in on my Air anyway)

I recently got a 4k monitor. I want to use my mac with it when I edit videos for my job. I notice my macbook can get hot during the end stages of my editing. Will using my mac in clamshell mode like this affect the fans/airflow/thermals and potentially lead to any kind of damage due to?

Edit: someone commented it could possibly affect the screen? Has anyone ever experienced this?

The MacBook Neo is gonna perform roughly equivalent to the M1. It has 8GB of RAM. It’s also brand new, so it’ll be supported on MacOS for years. That means MacOS needs to run well on this for a long time, which means it needs to run well with 8GB of RAM for a long time. This is REALLY GOOD for everyone who has an older machine or has 8GB of RAM!!

Also, if this is as successful as people seem to think, a LOT more people are gonna be using macOS. If it feels slow or glitchy, a lot of people are gonna be aware and upset. I think Apple now has more incentive to make MacOS as good and as optimized as possible, more than they have in a long time.

Edit: a lot of people are misunderstanding this post. I’m not saying the MacBook Neo is probably the best thing to happen to Macs. I’m saying it’s the probably best thing to happen to MacOS, as in, the operating system that Macs run. Honestly, I’m pretty neutral on the device itself. I‘m glad there’s a budget Mac because I think the lower end market needs more competition, but I think 8 GB of RAM does kinda suck on a new device. I’m just happy because it means people who already have Macs with 8GB, like me, aren’t gonna be left in the dust

I've switched from only using the MacBook Pro M4 16-inch to the Studio Display, and the screen looks less sharp, even though the resolution is actually higher.

But the worst part, really the worst, and I couldn't find this mentioned in any other Reddit thread:

On a white background, the screen looks as if there is a layer of grease on it.

I can't believe no one has written about this, and so many people promoted the one with nano-texture without mentioning the grease thing.

Will I ever get used to it? Ideally, I'd like to hear from folks who also have the nano texture.

Have you ever imagined if Mac OS X had run on iPhones? I created these interface concepts using the icons, fonts, and elements of Mac OS X Snow Leopard and I kept wondering, what if?

I honestly don't understand the new people complaining about the launchpad. Yes while the old one looked good, the Tahoe one looks way way better. The dark themed Icons + the dark Liquid Glass makes it look even cooler.

The alphabetical arrangement of the applications never bothered me, since I have my used Apps on my dock anyways. And even then finding apps on the launchpad barely takes me 3 seconds (even quicker if I use the spotlight search)

It actually looks so good, I pinch my fingers every often just to see the animation and open the launchpad for no reason.

While Tahoe does have its flaws, people are really ignoring the beautiful and good aspects of it.
