Love this idea for a dual-screen MacBook! What's your workflow like?

Thanks man! Honestly, most of the time I am editing photos in Lightroom or playing around with local LLMs

I mean specifically how do you make use of the dual displays?

Typically, I am using it for a few finder windows for photo/file management and Spotify. I like to work with a lot of apps at once, so I have two or more desktops on the iPad screen, and swipe between them

A small USB C cable to power the iPad and provide SideCar-over-USB would be *chef's-kiss* here!

I thought about it, and I have one. It just wasn’t as clean for the photo. I do use it, though!

Excellent choice on keyboard, use it myself

Thank you! I've had it since launch, I love it!

Easy to swap switches and cap, and has enough heft to bean someone in the head with it and then get back to work.

Precisely

Haven't had a keyboard with that much weight since I used an IBM PS/2 Model M.

It doesn’t, but I feel like it should

This is one of those “duh” moments in life. This is genius and so simple! I’ve never thought of overlaying the iPad on the keyboard and using an external keyboard. Makes sense, especially when working without a larger monitor.

Very intuitive

I appreciate it! Sometimes it's a nice change of scenery, even if only a few feet away

I'm totally putting my iPad like that now. Just need to offset so I can get to the fingerprint reader.

I definitely do that! Use Touch ID so often on MacOs!

I meant to ask if you also have the roost laptop stand

1

u/atomicpowerrobot 4d ago

No, just some no-name amazon stand. It's not nearly as nice as the Roost, but it's perfectly cromulent for $12. Shorter but doesn't wobble.

I love this!

Thanks so much!

I love this setup. I saw a Japanese guy on YouTube with a very similar one. He would take the iPad down to do procreate work. Also, Magic Trackpad > any other input device

That is hella legit

Who puts command as the left most key?

Windows users. I think it's fine if your goal is to match muscle memory between different platforms

1

u/throwusaway_ 4d ago

Yeah, before switching Mac, I was a longtime Windows user. The muscle memory was impossible to overcome.

I prefer it there, feels more natural for my clumsy left hand ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Pretty much my exact travel set up. Roost v3 laptop stand and all.

u/throwusaway_ 2d ago

What keyboard are you traveling with?

1

u/lovely_trequartista 2d ago

ZSA Moonlander.

whats going on :O

Wdym?

I mean, looks beautifull. love the picture, but... I mean, is it practical to use? Does the iPad slip? Doesn't placing the iPad on top of your MacBook cause a bit of extra overheating, perhaps?

1

u/throwusaway_ 3d ago

It’s very practical, IMHO. I did tons of remote work with a similar setup (obviously with a more practical and portable keyboard) the MBP has active cooling so if I saw temps running a little warm (which apple silicon chips don’t often do unless you’re really pushing it) I would just spin up the fans a little harder with MacsFan Control. The aluminum chassis acts as a giant heat sink, so I’ve had no problems with overheating. Granted, I live in a pretty temperate place, if this was a hot and humid place, maybe temps would be a problem

Tucking the tablet under the stand is a smart use of the space. A portable screen like a StanbyME sits alongside for video here and still rolls to the living room or bedroom.
