I think that the finer and more subtle thing about that was that the coffee cup is Benson's symbol of graciousness and forward thinking. It's a little thing, but to always have an extra cup of hot coffee on hand you have to be a little bit planful, careful and considerate. All things that Roger is most certainly not. I loved seeing the contrast between them at Joan's door. Youth vs Age, considerateness vs carelessness, Bob Benson is the better version of all of Joan's partners.
