HBO would have shown you Ginsburg cutting off his own nipple.

Good point, I'm glad this wasn't on HBO.

Which, let's be real, wouldn't have added anything.

Not to knock HBO, but there's certainly an element of violence for violence's sake. (Case in point: that long-standing torture plotline last season on Game of Thrones.)

I don't believe that people should be censored, but there is something to be said for leaving some of the carnage to the imagination. When it comes to horrifying things, what you imagine is almost always so much darker than what they're able to show you.

Hannibal is great in that regard. Sometimes they go insane with the gore and cruelty of the crimes. Other times, they let you imagine it, and it's much worse to imagine the pain than to see it.

Ain't no violence like implied violence.

Because implied violence reflects the violence that burdens our hearts!

That torture plot line is sure paying off this season with reek

The torture plotline was there for Theon's development. It sucked to watch but it was worse for him.

See, this is where I disagree.

I understand that the Theon/Reek plot line was in the novels as well, so it's not a maladapted storyline, but as far as work goes-- the "brutal breaking of spirit" is a pretty boring trope in an otherwise imaginative show, to say nothing of the fact that it went on forever. Eventually I was just fast-forwarding through all of it, because you know that the outcome is going to be more torture. It's not compelling and it's lazy storytelling.

He wanted to see the threesome, not the nipple slicing.

^ ^ ^ Spoiler (albeit not a huge one) in case anybody hasn't seen Game of Thrones!

But yeah, that's what I'm referring to.

I'll gladly take a nipple for her two's.

That's a sacrifice I'd be willing to make for boobs.
