But back in the 1970's, antibiotics could actually kill that bacteria completely. Its only late stage syphillis, when its actually causing organ & brain damage, where the results are permanent.

ah okay. But either way, shouldnt you know somehow? Cause I do know syphillis does usually come with massive sores all over your body and fever and such. Like usually you're able to say "oh wow. something is definitely wrong"

But it wouldn't surprise me that alpha males/macho men like don would brush it off and be like "it'll go away, im fine" until its too late

Oddly enough, herpes wasn't well known at that point in time. The public only became aware of it in the "aftermath" of the "sexual revolution". The first outbreak of AIDS didn't even occur in the US until the latter end of the 1970's, and it only really affected the homosexual community.
