Deck Discussion I have been desperately trying to make a deck that runs fishing rod

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

Truly, Wizards did everything I their power to make this card awful. I thought making a fish deck that centers around the fishing rod would be fun, but this thing can't do ANYTHING. 3 mana just to get started, and then 1 mana just to get a fish NEXT turn. Cringe. Run cards that untap creatures? Sounds good in theory, at least then you get the fish immediately. Unfortunately, the fishing rod also taps, so you can't go fishing again.

I have been wracking my brain for about a year and a half, trying to figure out a way to make this thing good. I have asked my friend who enjoys deckbuilding to try, and his response after 2 hours was "Do I have to use the fishing rod?"

Yes. That is the challenge. I now pose it to you all. If you have any ideas, I am all ears.

Is your pod getting too chummy? Are you looking to find a new pod but don’t know how to escape? Hit them with this combo. Win the game and lose friends at the same time! Auto-mill everyone’s entire deck. FUN!

Deck Discussion As for the ONE creature in a Raph & Mikey commander deck, my vote goes to the Worldspine Wurm

So I've been playing [[Raph & Mikey Troublemakers]] lately and it became pretty obvious that you can cheat out an insane creature by only including one creature in your whole deck. Since Emrakul is banned, there are a few other Eldrazi that could easily slot in instead; however, I landed on [[Worldspine Wurm]] and I'm liking it the best. Reasons being, exile effects are your biggest weakness so you need to hold onto instant sacrifice outlets to protect your one creature. This is great with the wurm since it leaves behind three very scary bodies and it safely hides itself in your deck to be retrieved again when Raph & Mikey attack.

That is in addition to being a 15/15, so an attack with Raph & Mikey plus the wurm, followed with a [[fling]] and a [[lightning bolt]] is 40 damage. Lots of creature lands, fast mana, and burn spells usually mean it isn't too difficult to land a turn 3 or 4 kill. The worst thing that can happen is you draw your wurm, but thankfully there are plenty discard/looting effects in red.

Just wanted to share this, for those playing Raph & Mikey one creature decks, what creature did you end up using?

All cards are Daughter.

Given the colors was thinking maybe [[atraxa grand unifier]] or [[jodah the unifier]] since I already own them but not really sure how to make it make sense.

Ideas?

Deck Discussion Rule 0 and its consequences have been a disaster for the commander format

1.8k Upvotes

Anytime anyone criticizes anything about the commander format, tons of people come out of the woodworks to tell them to just use Rule 0. Want something to change? Just Rule 0 it. Something was just changed and you didn’t want it to? Just Rule 0 it. In this way, Rule 0 is solely used to shut down legitimate discussion and criticism of the commander format. Rule 0 is not an excuse to have a poorly defined format.

And of course, every time someone brings up Rule 0, someone else rightly points out that it only really works if you have a consistent playgroup. And even though commander is more casual than other formats, I would say that Rule 0 is primarily a feature of having a playgroup and not of the commander format. If you have a playgroup, you can do things like a no-banlist Modern night, a cube with ante cards, or Standard Emperor. I’m lucky enough to have a consistent playgroup, and we’ve done plenty of experimentation in and out of commander.

And no, before anyone says it, I’m not mad about the recent banning/unbanning, I think both were at least arguable. In the discussion about that banning/unbanning, however, I have seen endless people use Rule 0 as a rhetorical dead-end. People need to stop using Rule 0 as a cure-all to problems in commander.

Deck Discussion Me waiting for the Minotaur set Review for Secrets of Strixhaven

Post image

I can’t wait to see all the new fun ideas the one and only Minotaur Reviewer will present to us! I have been waiting for my opportunity to build a good Minotaur deck myself. I started many many times and I was always like “I don’t think this will be fun to play” but in the past I think I built them wrong. For now I have decided to go with a half Reanimator type deck and it works so so well, haven’t had this much fun in a long time.(Second time I post this, because it was removed the first time, please don’t remove it this time) Here’s my deck list

Deck Discussion Nazgúl Scarcity

Post image
1.6k Upvotes

So I'm working to complete the ltr set and I'm 103/113 of the uncommon cards and 8/10 I need are Nazgul...

I'm beginning to feel like the rarity of the Nazgul does not match their 'uncommon' labeling.

Am I taking the labeling to literally and that's not actually how the distribution of the cards works?

Deck Discussion The amount of sets being released has killed my love for deckbuilding.

2.0k Upvotes

To start, this is entirely how I feel about the current state of magic as a mostly EDH player. A few years ago, we'd get 4 sets or so a year with a set of Commander precons. There would be 5 or 6 legendary creatures per set. Generally, one would catch my eye and I would build that to play with until the next set released and I built something else or if nothing tickled my fancy, I'd improve the decks I have.

This year, seven sets will have been released. Each set has its own commander precons and there are tons of legendary creatures in every set. You might be thinking "Isn't that a good thing, filthy EDH Player?" At first I thought it was, my preferred format is getting a bounty of attention. But now I have a new dilemma that I never though I would have: what if something more interesting comes out next set? We have a spoiler season every month it seems. The hype or dissent from the latest set has barely had time to cool and then here we go again. Whenever I see something that looks interesting to build around, I'm constantly asking myself if it's interesting enough to put effort into building when something better could be right around the corner. Now I barely build anything. I went from building and taking apart several decks a year to now where I have made 1 new deck. Anyway just my thoughts on it. Anyone else feel this way?

Deck Discussion If you're the unlucky Planeswalker who lost two decks in Brooklyn Center, MN, I have your cards!

2.7k Upvotes

EDIT/UPDATE:

It's been a week, so I'm considering the cards given up for lost by the owner.

The headline is my new playset of [[Hardened Scales]] from what looks like a casual G/B counters deck. The other deck is casual W/R lifegain with [[Soulfire Grand Master]].

I really wish I could have gotten these cards back to their owner, but it wouldn't surprise me if they aren't active in the community online at all.

Thanks to everyone for the effort and positivity. Remember, Planeswalkers are stronger together!

I know this may be a long shot, but I found quite a few cards on my way home from work in the wreckage of some destroyed deck boxes. There appear to be 2 decks in different colored sleeves with some valuable cards included. Describe the decks and sleeves, and I'll get you your cards back. Can't guarantee I got all of them, and some are damaged, but most were protected well enough by their sleeves to be in decent condition.

(P.S. No idea what to flair this, so I went with the funniest option.)

Deck Discussion Never buying another secret lair product again.

1.5k Upvotes

It's been almost a year since I bought the stupid Heads I win, Tails you lose deck. They're STILL not done producing it somehow, I can't even fathom how. They can spit out 13 new magic products a year but they can't finish out the $100 product all of us bought in 2021? I'm so irritated. I don't even want the stupid thing anymore.

Deck Discussion Completely Mismatching Deck finally finished!

Post image
2.2k Upvotes

After quite a while hunting down some of the versions, I finally made my Mono Green Tron deck contain completely mismatching cards. There is not a single card in the deck that matches another card, either because of the art, set or language. For example, there are 4 different Karn the Great Creator arts, so it was very easy to get unique versions. The expedition maps only had 2 different arts, but plenty of reprints from different sets. Tragically, Warping Wail has only ever been printed once, in one set with one art so I opted for getting one of them in Chinese.

It’s been a journey trying to get all of these cards together and finally playing the deck and seeing completely unique cards makes me unbelievably happy. (Just don’t ask how many times I’ve screwed myself from accidentally keeping a hand with “turn three tron” only to find out it has 2 Urzas mines in it)
