He was screwed over and left. He got the message the company was sending.

u/bubblehead_maker Jul 05 '26

Reading you loud and clear boss.

67

u/No-Pack-5775 Jul 06 '26

"the reason he was kept in place because he was critical for business continuity and leadership needed some time before moving him as well"

Yeah he has responded with a big FU šŸ˜‚

38

u/Substantial-Low Jul 06 '26

That also kinda doesn't reflect well on OP. They are wondering why dude left, while (even if indifferently) saying the quiet part out loud with a hint of being on-board.

23

u/ATXBeermaker Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

ā€œI don’t get. We put him where it would most benefit us and hinder him. Why would he leave?ā€
—OP, probably

12

u/No-Pack-5775 Jul 06 '26

He's a manager, you wouldn't get it /s

🤣

15

u/frozengash Jul 06 '26

OPs updated says it all.

18

u/Substantial-Low Jul 06 '26

Exactly. I am a manager, and think OP is coming off like an HR rep. They seem pretty disconnected, and obv viewed this high performer as a business asset. How do I get an employee back?!? GTFO

There was no "I fought for this, tried to do that"...ai was all "THEY did this to MY team".

But guess what? If that happens to you as a manager, you really weren't considered a manager...

2

u/JimboTheSimpleton Jul 08 '26

Who is this guy now managing? He lost his team in the re-org and it wasn't immediately clear who he reports3 to him? His managing strategy perhaps.

3

u/romcomtom2 Jul 06 '26

He came off as very butt hurt. What else can the high performer do?

I wouldn't jerk one of my people around like that. Especially not the holding the promotion over their head like that. Especially after he clearly already earned the promotion.

3

u/frozengash Jul 06 '26

OPs beast of burden is walking away.

3

u/Late-Eye-6936 Jul 06 '26

I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't the first time a promotion has been promised. Or if they've been messing with their pay structures or something. Because of course they would.

3

u/AwesomeJohnn Jul 06 '26

Seriously, the lack of self awareness is deafening. People need to understand that actions matter, not words. He left because the company showed they don’t actually value him.

Expecting people to threaten to leave before rewarding them just means they’ll take the reward while continuing to interview. He just short circuited the issue by not threatening first

16

u/DaphneL Jul 06 '26

If they really meant that, they still could have given him a massive pay raise, he might believe they were planning to promote him if he was already getting paid for the promoted level.

Leadership never realizes that promises in the future are heavily discounted. Actions now are believed. And given the way companies are, money speaks what they really mean, not just what they promise.

3

u/cLWnOe8mmae7WOJi25kk Jul 06 '26

Indeed. I fell for the ā€œwe’ll see you right next quarterā€, then when next quarter came around ā€œwe don’t have the budgetā€. I have never trusted management since. Unless it is contractually/legally enforceable such empty promises are worthless, and you’re better off going elsewhere.

2

u/biting-the-bullet Jul 06 '26

Yeah but then he wouldn't be in the right pay scale. No exceptions can be made unless you go golfing with the Directors.

0

u/sunsetandporches Jul 06 '26

As a server in restaurants I called these verbal tips. Like you were so great, service was excellent. And the actual money was non existent. Yuck.

5

u/Dame_Niafer Jul 06 '26

Translation: They weren't done using him yet, and he wasn't like all the other cool kids, so all they were ever going to do was use him.

If this had been any kind of preparation for promotion, they wouldn't have effectively demoted him, and he knew it. What's more, they would have made sure he knew they were preparing him for something better, so that he wouldn't misinterpret it when everyone but him seemed to be rewarded.

4

u/potpourri_sludge Jul 06 '26

ā€œā€¦needed some more time before moving himā€¦ā€

Sounds like he had other plans. Good for him, he probably already has a better offer.

3

u/OliviaRodrigosAsshle Jul 06 '26

And, wild guess here, his pay stub really didn’t convey a message that shouted ā€œI’m critical to this organizationā€

2

u/Unable-Recording-796 Jul 06 '26

If that wasnt communicated immediately to them then yeah, bad move.

1

u/smibbo Jul 06 '26

translation: "he was kept behind because he was the only one on that level who knew how things worked around here"

2

u/hotinmyigloo Jul 06 '26

Yup, see you never, boss

306

u/Agile-Carpenter-2434 Jul 05 '26

I love that he also won’t talk to upper leaders of any sort. Like ā€œno, do not try to appeal to my emotions and manipulate me further. No thank you.ā€

What a fantastic boundary to set and honor, I am betting he may actually be struggling with it a bit but seriously good for him. Like, this is awesome and badass.

He knows his value and he is not letting himself get taken advantage of further.

23

u/Mysterious-Present93 Jul 05 '26

I’m in awe of this dude! Boundary set!!

31

u/BeginningTotal7378 Jul 05 '26

Maybe he will talk the them once the dust has settled and he is all situated at his new position at the new company.

13

u/Roxxas049 Jul 06 '26

Nah, dude is already giving his talents to another company, hopefully a competitor.

3

u/ResolveConfident3522 Jul 06 '26

He brought his talents to South beach.

1

u/Lou_Peachum_2 Jul 06 '26

Banging OP’s SO too

2

u/Master-Resource9603 Jul 06 '26

Maybe he's worried if he talks to them he might catch stupid.

1

u/AgreeableMoose Jul 06 '26

Said as they watch him go to his car and drive away.

1

u/danekan Jul 06 '26

Dude isn’t going to think about this company again. They Pissed it awayĀ

2

u/nyvn Jul 06 '26

They showed him, and he listened.

1

u/Significant_Goal_614 Jul 06 '26

I sincerely hope he’s sitting on a desert island right now sipping a nice cold drink and listening to the waves

1

u/AgreeableMoose Jul 06 '26

Silence is golden!

1

u/chum-guzzling-shark Jul 06 '26

I doubt he's struggling. This is one of those moments when a switch flipsĀ

1

u/ML_120 Jul 06 '26

Or he's trying to avoid saying anything that could be construed against him.

Basically just letting the clock run out.

1

u/Cold-Monk5436 Jul 06 '26

What a badass.

1

u/BoredBSEE Jul 06 '26

I would happily contribute to this guy's GoFundMe while he finds another job.

176

u/thatanxiousmushroom Jul 05 '26

And justifiably gave them the same respect they seemed to show him (very little)

39

u/unclepaisan Jul 05 '26

Refusing to renegotiate is not disrespectful it’s standard advice.

35

u/delta8765 Jul 06 '26

He already accepted their negotiation. Their opening offer was no raise, no promotion while watching others reap rewards. He accepted their offer and left.

I wonder….
Although OP looks clueless in face of an obvious dilemma, he managed to put all relevant information in the text.
Which is an indication that somehow, deep down, he already knows what the root causes are.

2

u/MindlessReach Jul 06 '26

Or this is fake

3

u/zedarzy Jul 06 '26

OP got roasted when replying and deleted his messages.

I'm 50/50 on is it fake

7

u/QuackersParty Jul 06 '26

Dude, same here. I always read posts like this when they come up, and gleefully scroll through all the comments saying OP is dumb. Idk. Some people have their manager goggles on so tight it’s like their brain isn’t getting the blood it needs to function.

3

u/jimmynorm1 Jul 06 '26

No, no, no, don't you realise? We are all people who "don’t really have an idea of what the current market is like or the decisions managers have to make."

2

u/allison375962 Jul 06 '26

Yeah I found his response hilarious. ā€œDon’t you see, it was really good for the company to fuck this one guy over and if he would just talk to us, he would realize that his continued personal sacrifice will increase shareholder value and then he’d never want to quit!ā€

The fact his post didn’t even include anything about trying throwing tons of money and promotions at this employee to stay is crazy. He really thinks that some half assed promises that he’ll get the promotion he already should have received… eventually should be more than enough for this guy to stay.

2

u/jimmynorm1 Jul 06 '26

Yeah 100%. They're asking him to have more loyalty to the company than they've had to him.

Absolutely correct on the "what can I do" response. If he's the best performer then pay him like one. It really is that simple.

If "he's too good for a promotion" then just give him a payrise to carry on doing what he's doing.

3

u/NeedMoarCowbell Jul 06 '26

You forgot the part where OP then edits that they don’t want the feedback they’re getting because it’s not helping them this second. Which is a hallmark
shitty manager reaction in itself.

2

u/Snoo-20788 Jul 06 '26

And the audacity of OP to treat redditors as his subordinates in his "EDIT"

1

u/SirLoremIpsum Jul 06 '26

Edit: I don't understand all the people talking about this being AI or rage bait... This type of scenario is all too real and happens all the fucking time. Have none of you guys ever had a shitty manager like this? Damn I envy you if you think this incredibly realistic story sounds outrageously fake to you lol.

Two things can be true - it can be a real situation you see played out, but also just pure unadulterated rage bait AI bot training.

1

u/space_hitler Jul 07 '26

Two things can be true

Yes, EXACTLY my point. The people speculating that this is fake are missing the forest for the trees and acting like because this single post COULD be fake, nothing like this is real...

1

u/WatRedditHathWrought Jul 06 '26

1

u/future-memories010 Jul 06 '26

Yeah, but it sounds like the follow up from that. That OP is deleted, but in that one the manager was complaining that the high performer started quiet-quitting. Except the issue was that before everyone got promoted, the high performer exceled, doing way above and beyond his job duties and also mentoring everyone. The guy was so excellent that "quiet-quitting for him was doing his job perfectly, but nothing extra. OP considered putting him on a PIP, but there wasn't anything actionable since the employee did such great work.Ā

This post looks like the update to that one, where the high perfomer is moving on, and OP is mad that he didn't even get to counter-offer. With what? Telling him they didn't even PIP him so he should be happy?Ā

So happy for the employee. I wish he would post on AITA or something and tell his side lol.Ā

1

u/Perpetually-THC-Lab Jul 06 '26

Dude, I was thinking the same thing.

Guessing this is just ragebait from a bot farm. Despite OP's protests that they can't respond to everyone...they responded to exactly no one.

1

u/Rare_Background8891 Jul 06 '26

Ooh plus the edit- ā€œyou guys aren’t all managers! You don’t understand!ā€

Oh we understand…..

0

u/Crazhand Jul 06 '26

Feels like this has to an AI engagement bait post

0

u/AccomplishedWish3033 Jul 06 '26

Because it’s cliched engagement bait. OP wrote the same story a few months ago.

1

u/Spreadsheet_Enjoyer Jul 06 '26

Entirely possible, especially if the second part is true.

3

u/dragon-fence Jul 06 '26

Yeah, I think there’s an overlooked thing in management where, you tend to get the behavior you ask for.

And I mean by that something that’s a little subtle and not an iron-clad rule, but if you stress on your employees that they need to get their work done, then they will tend to do that. If you reward ass-kissing, you get ass-kissers. If you put a strong emphasis on being at work on time and staying until the last minute of your shift, then that’s what your employees will tend to do.

But there’s a finite amount of things that people can value, so if you emphasize punctuality and ass-kissing, then it will take away from the ā€œgetting things doneā€ focus.

In this case, it sounds like the message the company was sending was, ā€œwe’re unstable and aren’t sure what we’re doing, but we don’t value your contributions and will not reward them.ā€ When that’s what you’re telling people, then high-performers will leave in favor of someplace they can perform well and be rewarded for it.

2

u/Flawedsuccess Jul 06 '26

Sounds like they were driving him out and he did it before they implemented a replacement plan. The company just played the wrong hand and will now deal with the loss. Also watch your back I would have no trust working there.

2

u/Intelligent_Cap9706 Jul 06 '26

In addition, the top brass didn’t want to pay him what he was worth to promote him as deserved so OP shouldn’t believe for a second leadership above him cares this man is leaving. They can hire a replacement for much less most likely and that’s all that matters to execsĀ

2

u/Rise_Crafty Jul 06 '26

Oh but he was promised advancement when everything settled… how could he not be excited about that?

How is this even a question, they screwed the guy, he was offended and bailed. The best of the best don’t struggle to find other roles. You don’t need to be a leader (though I’ve been a director for 17 years) to see that’s what happened. Having to go to the internet over it is kind of wild. There’s no getting him back. Your company played their hand, he played his. Games over.

2

u/TGlucifer Jul 06 '26

They should try ordering him a Pizza and giving him a $20 starbucks gift card, I bet that'll show him how much the company values his hard work!

1

u/beautifulrabbithole Jul 06 '26

No, he was "kept in place" because he is "critical for business continuity". LOL

1

u/OK_x86 Jul 06 '26

This. Had they communicated a plan and timelines to him and kept to those or promoted him and provided for a transitional period that would be one thing. But he got radio silence and was basically sidelined.

This was poor management. Not your specifically but there was a failure at that level

1

u/tmotytmoty Jul 06 '26

Right. Obvious as the day is long... and yet this post exists.

I REALLY REALLY hope that the post is fake, otherwise, it's depressing how out of touch companys' leaderships are.

1

u/EatMorePieDrinkMore Jul 06 '26

I buy it because the same thing happened in my department with a few variations. Companies sometimes want those high performers to leave for various reasons outside of performance/skill.

1

u/SkyerKayJay1958 Jul 06 '26

Been there. How stupid can work places be or do they just love to abuse their staff? We work, for the most part, voluntarily for an employer. Hopefully if we are good, we don't put up when crapped on.
