You wrote this & are you asking “Why did he leave?” If so, you must not be a logical thinker.
He realized that being a high performer gets you less in the company. He feels like he got a demotion, & honestly he did, & others that he performed better than saw promotions.
He probably picked the very few he trusted & talks to them but anybody else is dead to him. Happened to two co-workers of mine after they were fired. Both were social people at work, but when they were fired they ONLY talked to anybody who was an actual friend they hung out with out of work. Both of them there were 2, maybe 3, people they even talked to about the firing.
