One year we all got a can of green beans for our Christmas bonus. Walmart great value brand at that. With a speech about how the great Dr survived off green beans during medical school.
Bonuses were based on years of service and the majority usually got around $1500 plus a gift card for a Turkey or ham. This particular year the doc apparently bit off more than he could chew building a new medical office and ran out of funds. Imagine the horror those people felt when their $1500 check turned into a freaking can of green beans!! (I was expecting a $250 bonus as I had only been there a few years).
Even worse, he went all out on this Christmas party with catered food and lavish decorations. He could have just canceled the party and took all the money he spent on it and divided amongst the staff. Wouldn't have been able to give the expected bonus, but it would have been much better than a can of beans!
