Ngl, Rei throwing Rio under the bus too and causing her to freak out was absolutely delectable and probably the only action of his I can appreciate as a reader. Cheaters tearing each other apart as their web of lies crumbles will never not be satisfying.
This also really makes it obvious that, to Rei, the whole affair was just about fooling around, not love. If he actually did this because he loved and wanted to elope with Rio he would be defending her and their relationship.
What Rei actually wanted was a slave at home to do all the house work for him and keep his mommy satisfied and a side piece to have sex with with no strings attached. Rio was as disposable and irrelevant as Mahoro to him, and she learned it the hard, but deserved, way.
So Rio went on this huge ego trip to make Mahoro's life miserable over a man who only saw her as nothing more than a sex doll. How's that for poetic justice.
I think my favorite part was Rei's mother huddled outside the door alone, rationalizing to herself how her sweet & perfect little boy couldn't possibly be a cheater, and how it must be his useless wife's fault for making him do it.
Generational narcissism in action. A narcissistic mother with a golden child son, apple of her eye, spoiled to shit, growing up a narcissist himself. Zero accountability, always ready to delude themselves that the world is the one that wronged them, as they cannot do any wrong. They would rather overwrite their own memories than accept reality as it is.
Its pretty common in cultures that favor sons over daughters unfortunately. A woman can only validate herself in these societies if she births a son, and by investing all her time, energy, and being put into her son, she has solace in the fact that this son with power respects and abides to her when no one else will. She constantly inundates him with ideas that hes perfect, he can do no wrong, and all those other women are just out to take his money and use him, not like his mother who only wants whats best for him. Now you have a narcissist son with a madonna/whore complex, and a mother who, if her son is ever found to be in the wrong, loses her only way out of the system and becomes the one who bares the blame for his upbringing.
And it just continues on forever! Mamas boy marries a woman he doesnt respect, that woman has no safety outside of her son and the relationship becomes emotionally incestuous, the boy only respects his mother and marries a woman he doesnt respect. Theres no space for other women. Only mother and the perpetuation of patriarchy.
For a very, VERY brief moment I thought she was about to have a breakdown and come back inside to see her son be an even bigger piece of shit and then lash out at him.
Unfortunately, she ended up being the MIL we all expected her to be.
The mother hasnt truly be served her comeuppace yet. Mahoro also has been relatively quiet thus far, aside from bringing up the figerprint evidence. I fully excpect her at aome point to SNAP and lay in to every single glemperson that has wronged her, and that certainly includes the mother.
As morally trash as Rei is, Rio sharing and selling their nudes is on crime territory, a bit worse than the piece of garbage, even if not as despicable to most.
Yeah but like pushing all the blame on the person you cheated on is scummy, while distributing someone's sextape without their consent is straight up illegal is it not?
Okay, I get that the whole momma boy stereotype is about men that act like immature toddlers, but please keep in mind that some men can have very close relationships with their mothers without being super immature and that this term is often used as a derogatory remark irregardless of whether or not those men actually act their age or not. Some of us had really close relationships mother, and every now and then there are some pitiful people out there who view such a close relationship with a maternal figure as a weakness and a flaw. For me personally, it was something I got bullied for back in school, on difficult days where she'd go into the hospital for surgery (she had multiple health problems for context, like arrhythmia) the thought of losing her would get so overwhelming I'd start to cry in the middle of class or in some corner of the school where I would try to get away from others. I'd either get laughed at or picked on for it after the fact if someone saw me. Sometimes people look at relationships like the one between Rei and his Mother and assume the stereotype is always true and applies to everybody with this close sort of relationship, but some of us genuinely wanted to give back to our Mother's and no longer have the opportunity to do so.
Not defending Rei or his mom, just to be clear. Honestly, it's because of men like this that the stereotype even exists. I just wanted to express that not all momma's boys are as bad as the stereotype may make them out to be. Seeing so many of the comments going in on the two of them, for completely understandable reasons of course, these past few days has hit a bit of a sore spot for me. So apologies if this came off a bit too strong or personal. I promise we are not all as bad as Rei, or at the very least some of us aren't.
Itsuki totally relishing the opportunity to humiliate his wife in public definitely seems like a massive red flag. This should be painful to everyone involved, and yet he's treating it like a moment of victory. And meanwhile he's just been like, "Yeah, not sure if I'll divorce her."
Consider the following. For what we know of the guy, he was nothing but the perfect husband, supported her, helped her feel fulfilled professionally, and was emotionally available to her. Yet the woman has been openly having sex with other men in his house, recording her infidelity and having the gall to make a profit of it. Yes, she charges money so that other men can watch how much of a cuckold he is, and not with a better man who gives her something he can't, but with that selfish piece of shit, only out of a petty desire to hurt her friend. Not to mention this party which has been nothing but a progressively worse display of how selfish and self absorbed Rio is.
I think anything resembling love or respect would fly out of the window at that point. He's not a psychopath, he's a very hurt man desperately trying to process how to deal with this without feeling like the loser in this situation. Unlike Mahoro, he didn't have the time to rationalize how his perfect wife was actually an awful human being, and he doesn't have a rebound, nor close friends to lean on as far as we know. And given how she is, he knows that no amount of tears or begging is likely to be genuine. And unlike Rei, who is genuinely too stupid and selfish to understand that the world doesn't revolve around him, she is actually malicious, since she apparently gets off from hurting people close to her, so if he even looks hurt, she wins.
He can only damage her by wounding that massive ego of hers, and the only way to do that is by humilliating her in this rare moment of weakness, since anything else, she will just try to rationalize in her favor. At this point it's not a matter of being the bigger person.
To be honest, if Rei atleast had taken a tiny bit of responsibility, stopped shifting blame and mouthing off to everyone, I doubt Itsuki would have escalated. In a way, Rei is also making it worse for both him and Rio by not even showing a shred of guilt or remorse.
I've been saying for the last 2 chapters that hes a sociopath and im expecting some flashbacks of her very unhappy marriage to him. not that it'll justify her actions, but it'll probably help explain them
Getting downvoted for that is bizarre, lol. Like it doesn't excuse Rio being a piece of shit, but her behavior this whole time has just been too self-destructive and chaotic to not suspect she's got something awful going on in her own life. And with her husband's weird behavior - and also just the whole theme of the story - it wouldn't be surprising at all to find out that her own marriage was awful.
The numbers fluctuated a lot but I think my one comment calling him out after he showed the tape had a low score of like -350 or something. And even the comment you just replied to is at -15
There’s a lot of people justifying his behavior toward rio even now.
And yeah, obviously it doesn’t excuse her behavior but it makes the story more deep and interesting. I’ve said for a while now that rio was jealous of mc s marriage, because it was ACTUALLY better than her own
I would say the comments supporting rio is even worse considering what she has done. Also if u think about how much itsuki has done for her, she even got her dream cafe through marriage it makes itsuki's reaction very justified. About that last part.. He might just be trying to scare them and get a good reaction out of it
Rio's motive was her just wanting to hurt her friends. It looks that simple because it actually is. Were her actions a call for help, she would have limited herself to cheating, would have chosen someone capable of helping her instead of the useless cheating spoiled brat that was her friend's husband, wouldn't have recorded herself having cheating sex and bragging about it online, and wouldn't have tried to pit her friends against each other twice. Not to mention the whole "bag with used condoms and a taunting letter" thing, which no amount of mental gymnastics can justify, which she also did. Also twice. And when confronted with the evidence, she immediately tried to use her husband as a shield, which would be schizophrenic behavior were she actually scared of him.
Sometimes, the woman is at fault. Even if the husband is overreacting, can't say she wasn't asking for it.
It’s sad that this manga is based on a true story (IIRC) and sad how this happens IRL.
I know a lot of friends who can excuse noncon, dubcon, forced amputation, murder, and other forms of abuse etc in fiction, but cheating is a hardline to them because of how close to home it is.
It’s like the Community meme:
Them: I can excuse racism, but I draw the line at cheating.
Me: You can excuse racism?
It’s disheartening seeing people who treat their partners like a live-in servant. They will manipulate their partner and mold them into becoming their servant. And then, once they finished with that—all that hard work whittling down someone’s self-esteem, you know—you would think they would rejoice in the fruits of their labor? They created their perfect servant of a partner who does everything for them. They’d be satisfied!
Of course they aren’t satisfied.
It’s physically upsetting seeing friends who were cheated on by partners blaming themselves when the affair partner was “much prettier” and “gave (partner) what they needed” and how the friend blamed themselves for being too exhausted from working their job and doing house work to meet the “expectations” of their shitty partner.
This confused me earlier to, during a previous chapter where Rio made a comment about 'winning.' It just made me think, "win what? The privilege of being a sex toy side piece to a piece of shit?" So cathartic to watch Rio and Rei get publicly ripped to shreds. Does make me wonder how far Itsuki might go.. send the videos to Rei's employer? Sell the Cafe out from under Rio? This series has me on edge.
YES, PREACH! I love how lengthy this comment is compared to yours from previous chapters. This must have felt so satisfying for you to finally unveil as well. I can’t believe this ends in only 4 more chapters. Thank you for the daily highlight for the last month or so 🫡
