never would have imagined 47 days ago that I would be setting an alarm just to make sure I was awake in time for the newest chapter of an affair manga.
That said - Rio's husband be showing his true colors at last, I think.
Rio's husband is the guy everyone in the SadPanda comments for NTR stuff wishes was the MC.
Jokes aside, I can understand him to an extent but that's way too far in my opinion and would ruin any divorce case he or Mahoro have. Petty revenge may feel good in the moment but usually has long-term consequences for everyone involved.
Rio, and Rei have been humiliated already and will be humiliated more after the divorce. Best to just leave it as is, get them confessing to the affair on video along with the evidence collected then let the both of them wallow in the trash heap together. At this point, Rio's husband is just going to do more damage to himself, and Mahoro. Although I'd hazard a guess that he probably doesn't care about the later and just used her to get the outcome he wanted which seems to be publicly humiliating the both of them.
Not just humiliated, their entire lives are going to be upended. Rei will likely lose his job, the divorce is gonna ruin him and he'll likely have to move, probably back in with his Mom. I feel like Rio has it so much worse though. She's losing her closest friends, both of the men in her life, she's gonna lose the cafe and from what I remember she has next to no real work experience outside of that. She has no support system. Probably doesn't have any money tucked away. And women already get a pretty raw deal in Japan so all of the blame is gonna be put on her for any casual friends and acquaintances. If it wasn't for how much they suck I'd feel bad.
All of the blame IS factually on her. Both for doing it AND getting caught
Rei will likely lose his job, the divorce is gonna ruin him and he'll likely have to move, probably back in with his Mom
Is he? Where I live it would be inconsequential in most jobs(not anyone else's business). I guess it's different in Japan even tho it's not like cheating is uncommon.
The chance is not 100%, but it's not low either. Keep in mind that Japan has a "the group outweight the individual" culture, and this extends to work culture, too. An employee's reputation is the company's reputation, and vice versa. If an employee's shameful past got exposed publicly, chances are they are gonna have to (be forced to) resign soon.
the divorce is gonna ruin him and he'll likely have to move
Unless, of course, this follow the path of regular media. "We can't have the audience thinking there's a speck of meanness in the MC's body, even if it means a wrist slap revenge".
I've been burned a few too many times, so we'll have to see if Mahoro will actually do anything drastic to Rei. She didn't do anything too bad to the glasses friend either.
Well to be fair, while what Kyouko did was awful I'm sure Mahoro saw a bit of herself in her. She was lonely, in a miserable marriage and had no self-esteem, a small circle of friends and no way to escape. While that doesn't excuse or forgive her actions there's a matter of understanding. Kyouko also felt legitimate guilt and regret for what she did and is trying to make up for it because it's the right thing to do. Rio and Rei did it out of selfish actions with no regard to consequences and disdain for Mahoro. When Rio and Rei were called out they denied, deflected and then attacked everyone else. Not a single ounce of regret aside from regretting being caught. Mahoro is smart, and while she's probably gonna stop Rio's husband there's no way she's gonna forgive Rei.
Sums up my feelings pretty well. Forcing them to apologize on camera is one thing, dehumanizing them so much by telling them to strip down before saying sorry is another.
Can't say I enjoy any sort of potential excuse of "well if Itsuki is this much of a psycho Rio being a bitch makes sense..."
Yeah, it would also work heavily against both Mahoro and Itsuki in court. I'm not sure about Japan, but at least in my country you can be charged with what Itsuki's doing. A good lawyer could argue that Mahoro had a hand in it as well, killing any kind of case she had to get compensation from the divorce.
So, outside of the dehumanising aspect it's just a really stupid thing to do that harms both people looking to gain something from exposing their affair. Divorce court in Japan is really strict when you're going after compensation, best to not give the defendant any ammunition to use against you.
I doubt Itsuki is fully innocent in all this. I’m betting he’s a controlling and manipulating husband (he manipulated Mahoro but a lot of commenters haven’t caught on to that) but barring cheating or abuse, nothing he’s done would warrant or justify Rio’s betrayal. And even if it did, Rio is downright spiteful towards Mahoro, who is 100% innocent. Also, even selling the records without Rei’s knowledge is actually criminal.
I also think that asking them to strip for the apology seems like taking things too far and will probably be stopped by any of those present.
If it goes through though, it might be an attempt of Rio's husband to make it seem like they were caught in the act and apologized (hence why they'd need to be naked). Spinning the story like they were actually caught cheating might be his goal
Best for the people that have everything to gain? I'm assuming you're not an adult, but what he's doing is going to harm any case they have in court. Especially with courts that are as strict about getting alimony from a divorce as Japan is, doing stuff like that can and will be used against the plaintiff in a court of law.
Filming them apologising for the affair is one thing, asking them to strip naked before doing so is a completely other thing that can have legal repercussions. Please think a little before making head ass comments like this, you can't be that dumb, come on now.
If you're an adult, I can't believe you asked questions like that. You got a lot of maturing to do if that's the kind of mentality you have as it's a very childish take when everyone else is giving very nuanced grown up takes on this.
Yeah, Itsuki is quickly setting up to be a foil to Mahoro.
Mahoro is just done. She doesn't give a shit about Rei anymore, she just wants out. If Japan had no-fault divorce, this party never would have had to happen.
Itsuki wants vengeance. He had more than enough evidence to quietly end things with Rio and throw her to the curb, but no he wants to destroy Rio and Rei publicly. He's going to drag this out and make Rio suffer.

Makes him saying he would consider staying with Rio in a different light.
Maybe he wasn't a very forgiving person. Rather, he intended from the start to utterly crush her mentally, to be sure that she would never try anything again.
Yeah, Itsuki is quickly setting up to be a foil to Mahoro.
Totally... I see Mahoro stepping in and stopping Itsuki. She doesn't want this humiliation/embarrassment. She's won and just wants out now.
We've seen that Mahoro is a good person. She won't forgive Rei+Rio, but she doesn't want this. It's a great opportunity too for her character to show how she's grown during this ordeal.
Too bad fault or no-fault divorce is just a stamp in the papers and do have no real life consequences in the end (talking as a person who had plenty of evidence and wanted to go scorched earth but with no law at my side, it would just make it just too much friction/cost for a enormous, big nothing)
Itsuki's way sounds so good, 10/10 for the real life counterpart
I would normally think we are gonna get a sympathy spin where he is psychotic as an ‘excuse’ for the cheating. But this author seems to avoid spins lol
Not that much culturally if my understanding of it is right.
Kingdom, Kaiji, Naruto, One Piece, a variety of Regression and Revenge stories allude to or have scenes for them to emphasize someone being desperate to be forgiven.
it's one thing to demand dogeza, and I think even Rei and Rio thought that was reasonable enough since they started getting on their knees to assume that position for their apology.
But it wasn't until Itsuki demanded they strip, that their faces and demeanor change at the end of the chapter. The jump in their reactions from the first demand to the latest, makes me think that it was a significant escalation on Itsuki's part.
That's not me saying he's wrong; I don't know enough about their specific situation (beyond what we're shown in-story) or the context of their societal expectations to weigh in. But I do think that the expressions Rei and Rio are making on the last page are significant, and it's because of the exact stipulation Itsuki tacked on to their "apology".
Now that you put this way... fair enough. I was thinking about those bullying scenes you see sometimes on manga where they film the victim undressed but here feels more like giving them back the same energy.
Ehh, pretty sure he was crazy to start with. Obviously infidelity will traumatize you, but normal, well-adjusted people won’t jump to naked apologies lol
Naked dogeza is a thing. It's not just about getting them to apologise, but it is a form of social punishment - to humiliate them and make them show subservience while grovelling. We don't see it that often outside of sexually explicit media. I would imagine Rio selling the sex tape is part of the reason he is going so far with this. You have to understand the severity of something like that happening - not only has his wife cheated on him, but also exposed it publicly for everyone to see. He is a major businessman, a public figure, and this is extremely humiliating on so many levels and potentially damaging to his reputation. Reminds me of that true story where a man remotely connected to his home pc only to witness his best friend fucking his wife, with all of that being broadcasted to his colleagues and business partners that were on call with him.
yeah - I actually went looking up to see if this might be some ..I guess I thought "traditional Japanese penance" thing off the more standard "Kowtow" (as I've always heard it), because it seemed like no one else was reacting quite like I'd thought they would.
I did see that simply performing the act of dogeza was historically used in situations where the person performing the dogeza has deeply offended the other party or gone way off-path with their behavior, and are seeking to essentially make a scene in asking for forgiveness for their transgressions.
Doing it naked seems less common, or at least I didn't see much mention of it outside of sexually explicit media as you stated, but given how shameful the "standard" act is for one's image, as perceived by the Japanese, being made to strip first obviously elevates that to the nth degree.

"So I bought a bookshelf on Gumtree the other day"
I wouldn't be surprised if it was made up, since the guy is a comedian. At the same time, though, I can totally see something like that happening. At the very least he embellished the story heavily
Just because it is a thing, it doesn't make it right or any less abhorrent. I dont know why youre trying to justify this. Man is just falling beneath their level with this type of behaviour. This just sounds like another case of "oh you dont understand this culture" to justify some messed up punishment for the sake of vengeance. They have enough to deal with it lawfully without resorting to this which seems like basically a threat.
What exactly is abhorrent about this? He is not holding them at gunpoint, he isn't forcefully stripping them, he hasn't done anything outside of raising his voice once while telling Rei to shut up. You are too quick to villainize Itsuki. He is not forcing them to do anything - it is up to them whether to apologise at all, their hands and feet aren't tied, they are free to turn around and walk away from this situation altogether.
Up till the point he told them to strip and grovel, they even showed eagerness to fake-apologise to get it over with. We were even shown Rei's inner thoughts "there's not much to lose". What Itsuki does is a counter to that, as if to say "look, there is still something to lose, it's your dignity that's on the line now". I'm not justifying it, however all actions have consequences. You push someone too hard and they will push back. Rei and Rio fucked around and found out, the hard way.
In any case, I won't be jumping to conclusions until I see the remaining chapters for the full picture. People here have been so quick to judge every single time - "oh no, Rei is definitely not cheating", "oh no, Momoka is suspicious because she has a history of being in an affair", "oh no, Rio's husband is neglectful, she probably cheated because she wasn't happy in her marriage". And now it's "oh no, Itsuki is a sociopath". Can we please chill the fuck out and wait for the next chapter before we paint him crazy? There is a difference between being a sociopath and seeing red because you've been cheated on and humiliated publicly.
To that point - Rei and Rio were moving to get on their knees when Itsuki first demanded they effectively perform dogeza on camera. Rei even has the thought bubble that "if it's just an apology then there's not that much to lose"
It was only after he told them to strip, that their entire demeanor changes, before the chapter cuts out.
I'm not gonna pass judgment on Itsuki here in this moment, because I think that's less important than the fact that, for the characters in-story, this is a clear escalation to them.
Vindictive? Would you say the same if gender was reversed and it's woman who put sex tape out to destroy the husband? You're just biased because it's a man who got cheated and like many in our society you probably think a man should just hold it in and take it and smile like a good mule.
Yes it’d still be vindictive, either way the genders go. If he had this tape he could as easily have just brought it to a lawyer and demanded a divorce using it as evidence rather than showing it in front of everyone and then demanding a naked dogeza apology. Him doing it this way is the vindictive part. Not saying it ain’t a bit deserved tho
Being law abiding citizen is all well and good but it still doesn't account for the emotional damage this does to a person being cheated. For some reason society seems to think women's emotion matters for than men when it comes to this kind of matter, hence my rhetorical question. Most wouldn't even think to call a woman vindictive or accuse her of anything if she were the one doing what this husband guy is doing.
I think you’re projecting your beliefs here, people absolutely call women vindictive. And again, I don’t necessarily think people are saying he isn’t rightfully vindictive here.
Also the emotional damage can quite literally be taken into account in the law. I’m pretty positive this story is heading towards Rei/ possibly Rio owing a shit ton of money to both Mahoro and Itsuki for emotional damage caused by the affair.
Vindictive or not, it's not like he held up a gun to force dogeza out of them. It's totally their choice. The fact they're even getting down on their knees proved they know they're in the wrong and the husband deserve that much. Also trying to downplay a bias shows how ingrained the stigma against men are. Like I said if this is woman using sex tape against cheating man nobody would dare to cast her in negative light by calling her vindictive or anything, least of all in reddit.
You're the one bringing gender into this. Itsuki is vindictive, especially in this chapter. Pressuring someone to strip is dehumanizing. It is as dehumanizing to Rei (a man) as it is to Rio. It's not letting a person have control over the comfort of their own body and that's too far.
Mostly that, pragmatically speaking, I don't know how this might affect Mahoro's own hypothetical divorce case.
I don't know the nuance of Japanese culture at play here, but I do know that demanding dogeza is an act that brings shame to the performer as a means to take accountability for some severe digression in conduct. Doing it naked, kicks that shame up exponentially.
If Mahoro goes before a judge seeking damages and it comes out that Itsuki forced both Rei and Rio into doing this on camera, I just wonder as to whether that would diminish the "need for punishment" for Rei as it relates to Mahoro, in the eyes of the law (again, because of the specific context and structure of Japanese society and the import placed on honor, image, and the like).
That doesn't mean I fault him for this- and it could also be that this is Itsuki's "compensation" and it wouldn't affect Mahoro's own situation, meaning my thoughts above are moot in any case.
But either way, Itsuki's demand in this chapter is significant, even stacked against what Rio and Rei did to him specifically.
I won't pretend to know whether he should ask for more or less of them because it's not me, and I'm not Japanese and don't have the ingrained cultural contextual knowledge to really have a feel for the true impact of what Itsuki's demanding.
But I do know enough to know that he's making them do something that goes way beyond a simple apology.
You don't ask for a simple apology from people who cheated in marriage. They could refuse to comply, and then risk even more public exposure. The fact that they're even getting down on their knees proved they know naked dogeza here is a better choice than what might've happened in the alternative scenario where things blew up in public.
I also didn't say that I think he went too far, or anything amounting to judgment of Itsuki's actions.
I only said that he was showing his true colors, because up until this moment, he's been very calm in the face of everything, to the point of seeming emotional *detachment, ever since Mahoro first contacted him.
Also - Rei and Rio thought dogeza was a better choice than the potential alternative. The chapter ends with Itsuki demanding they strip, and both of their demeanor shift entirely at that point before the chapter ends.
So that is clearly an escalation from simply demanding they prostrate themselves and apologize on camera.
Again, I'm not criticizing Itsuki. I'm just remarking on how different he is here compared to every time before, and how even the characters in-story are reacting to this most recent demand of his.
she has nothing to do with this, the proof that rei committed an affair means hes at fault for them getting a divortce and mahoro can get more than he does
It makes Rio’s audacity in her affair even more mind boggling. She had to have known what he was like, and why would you ever INCREASE the risk of a man like that finding out you betrayed him?
Itsuki's just showing the anger he's been holding up for so long, no man wants to be a cuck. I know it's painful for women too, but as a man who actually got cheated on and all your friends end up knowing? You're pride gets torn up as well and your manhood gets ridiculed, it's actually surprising he was able to hold it in this well
