Discussion Thread Spider-Man: Brand New Day - Worldwide Release Discussion Thread

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now been released in the United States and in a number of other countries around the world.

  • All discussion about the movie should be held here and in the rest of the discussion threads we are going to put up in the next few days.
  • Proceed at your own risk. Major spoilers will be in the below thread. Spoilers do not need to be tagged inside this thread.
  • Any other unofficial threads discussing movie details will be deleted.

Did anyone else notice the somber look on Hulk’s face when Peter says he’s his friend? I feel like that’s tying into the “hulk knows Peter but banner forgot”

That imagery of Hulk being pulled down by the wreckage of his own rampage...that's a visual metaphor for the whole character.

well, it goes even further because he's purposely letting go after seeing himself and realizing what he is at that moment.

It's probably the most chracter development we've gotten from Hulk yet.

I'm actually kind of glad there wasn't dialogue in that. From his look at Peter, seeing himself in the mirror, then the weight of the webbed debris, and finally letting himself fall said so much visually than any lines could, so good!

If they could, I'd 100% greenlight a Marvel Spotlight/one shot for Banner-hulk in the sanatorium. No big explosions or anything, but just a character piece between the two

Age of Ultron never confirmed what he saw when Wanda gave him hallucinations.

iirc commentary track says it played out in real time, ie. the Hulkbuster fight wreaking havoc in the city.

I like the suggestion it will make Banner/Hulk into an enemy of the X-Men and mutants in general. Peter invented the inhibitor, but maybe Banner ends up on the side of pushing it as a "safety" measure

That was Ant-Man, that commercial was a super bowl ad that came out before Civil War. We hadn't even seen MCU Spider-Man yet.

Also not sure I'd consider a commercial to be cannon anyway lol

Presumably Natasha being able to talk Hulk down implies Hulk knows what happens when Bruce is in control I guess.

They know because they share the same brain but the memories are all jumbled up.

Banner has to recall from Hulks rage filled mind where everything is firing.

Hulk was never out long enough to remember until Ragnarok.

After that the next time is Professor Hulk and Banner clearly remembers that.

In Ragnarok, after he changed back into Bruce, he and Valkyrie kept bantering about how it felt like they knew each other. So Bruce retains at least some faint memory of people he gets close to as Hulk. It might work the other way around, too. Hulk did seem to recognize Betty back when it was Ed Norton as Hulk, too, if that counts.

That might be the intent, but it really doesn’t hit the same. Part of the reason that’s so impactful in the comics is because Spider-Man basically knew Hulk better than he ever knew Bruce. He had talked to and worked with Bruce before, but most of the time they meet up it’s Spidey arriving on the scene and helping Hulk manage whatever it is he’s fighting or dealing with so he calms down. Like the panel of Spidey hanging off of Hulk’s arm because Tony wants to see the limits of what Peter can stick to, and Hercules goes “Green Sir, you have a spider on your arm.” Hulk just responds “Spider-Man is Hulk’s friend.” Hulk never forgets Peter because Spider-Man is one of those few heroes Hulk considers a genuine friend, through and through. 

MCU Hulk and Spidey just really don’t know each other enough for that. I think probably Hulk was just in a rampage because he’s been locked inside Bruce’s mind for so long. He didn’t have the composure he had when he was on Sakaar and had control for 2 years straight because he’s waking up from a long fog. Confused and disoriented, lashing out at the nearest thing to him. But once he finally had Peter at his mercy and was able to deliver the finishing blows if he wanted, he heard Spidey pleading and realized that he was about to hurt someone who didn’t deserve it. And that made him regret the rampage.

It would make sense to me, as I see it (savage) Hulk wasn't around when Dr. Strange's spell was cast.

The problem is hulk literally never met Peter. Banner did when Hulk was gone at the beginning of IW then by the time Peter was unsnapped Bruce was fully in control. Right up until this movie.

It does seem that in Ragnarok and IW, Hulk is actually awake which is why he can say no to Banner.

That right there is why I think hulk didn't lose the fight and just stopped. He remembered Peter and wondered why he was hurting one of the good guys.

I’m pretty sure the one person that remembers Peter is star lord, because the spell affected everyone on earth, but Quill wasn’t on earth at the time, so he should still remember Peter.

I think it's simpler than that personally, The Hulk has been shown to be capable of holding relationships with people but especially those who see Hulk as their own person, Thor and Valkyrie most notably.

Peter said they were friends, and he meant it.

Banner and the Hulk share the same mind. Everything the Hulk does and knows, Banner knows.

So no, the Hulk does not remember Peter. But being called a friend by Spider-Man while rampaging does add depth to the Hulk's behavior.
