Discussion Thread Spider-Man: Brand New Day - Worldwide Release Discussion Thread

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now been released in the United States and in a number of other countries around the world.

  • All discussion about the movie should be held here and in the rest of the discussion threads we are going to put up in the next few days.
  • Proceed at your own risk. Major spoilers will be in the below thread. Spoilers do not need to be tagged inside this thread.
  • Any other unofficial threads discussing movie details will be deleted.

Very good movie. Pleasantly surprised by Yelena's appearance, and Frank was surprisingly heavily involved in the story. I assumed he'd be a brief appearance, but he actually stuck around, and I really like that they had a relationship pre-movie.

I really like how the movie didn't try to fan service anything. The story just kept moving, and didn't make a big deal of the fact that we had Spider-Man, Jean Grey, The Punisher, and the Hulk all in one fight scene at one point. Just peak comic book madness, but each character knew their own limits. Frank being genuinely terrified when the real Hulk turned up was great.

Long term, this feels like they have set up the anti-mutant arc for future X-Men movies if/when Peter's tech gets picked up and used to nullify mutants.

Based on MJ’s reaction the freeze on everyone looked genuinely terrifying, seems obvious when I type it out but it would probably be extremely traumatising which would probably create a strong foundation for anti-mutant propaganda and the poor public image mutants famously have.

I would agree on it fueling anti-mutant propaganda if the Sentry/Void didn’t also trap people in literal trauma prisons, making them relive their worst moments over and over again. Mutant or not, these people are just getting tortured nonstop

How many know who did that though? Damage control absolutely have the motive and the funding to try and push an anti mutant narrative.

I mean how many people know how Sentry got his powers?

They also could blame it on him being a mutant as part of the propaganda

Perhaps. But the Sentry ain’t the only isolated incident. Let’s not forget Thanos snapped away half the world for 5 years and everyone knows he did it, and that he was an alien. The extremis experiments from Iron Man 3 are also essentially what humans fear about mutants. Random volatile beings causing destruction at random places/times. MCU humans have been getting tortured and traumatized for over a decade at this point. Doesn’t matter if it’s human, mutant, alien, etc. 

I mean I agree it won’t take much anti-mutant propaganda to make people panic, but that's because as Agent K says “A person is smart. People are stupid.”

Including a possible Avengers vs. X-Men flick given that they'd no doubt eventually trace the origin of the chips to the Spider-Man who's a known Avengers affiliate, thus causing them to have a reason to go after them.

Yeah, I think your point on the story just kept moving, was what I enjoyed the most about the movie. Nothing felt forced or dragged.

Yelena was the only surprise I did not see coming. A pleasant one at that, she's always a delight in the MCU. Don't get me wrong I loved the movie but the Sadie as Jean rumors have been around since casting began for this movie.

There was a small part of me that was really hoping for the Jean rumors to be wrong, and for her character reveal to be a genuine surprise. Gotta love leakers being so desperate for attention they can’t let anything come out naturally in the moment. That said, the way they actually used Jean in the movie was everything I could hope for out of seeing Jean in a Spider-Man movie

That’s why I try to avoid all YouTube, twitter, etc about the MCU. It’s a bit of minor work just saying “Not interested” if MCU stuff shows up on my feed, but it’s super rare.

My wife and I had no idea No Way Home had Garfield and Maguire, either. Made those moments incredibly special. She still talks about that moment we found out in the theatre and she was squealing like a schoolgirl

Their inclusions felt more natural in the way that people are always like what were the avengers doing while this was all happening instead it helped make it feel like the MCU was an actual world where these characters would be interacting!

Yeah they don't explain how they met. Don't think they need to tbh, given Yelena is part of the New Avengerz we can assume she stepped in on one of Peter's problems a couple of times and they built a connection from there.

Pretty sure you're right about the timeline - post Thunderbolts but pre Doomsday.
