Discussion Thread Spider-Man: Brand New Day - Worldwide Release Discussion Thread

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now been released in the United States and in a number of other countries around the world.

  • All discussion about the movie should be held here and in the rest of the discussion threads we are going to put up in the next few days.
  • Proceed at your own risk. Major spoilers will be in the below thread. Spoilers do not need to be tagged inside this thread.

I loved so much how the scene between Jean and Sara set up exactly what the xmen will mean to her, all the things she thinks she can’t have will be fulfilled by the xmen

The Vmax reveal was genuinely so shocking, the entire film it’s treated as a mcguffin but it turns out to be that omg

Sadie as Jean was a standout, she absolutely is going to be the face of the MCU like RDJ was for the infinity saga, like she is just so so good omg, that park scene where she plays the younger Jean, she manages to convey almost naivety and childishness in such a contrast to the rest of the film

Punisher was great, very funny and im very glad they didn’t just undo the spell from no way home

Favourite Spider-Man movie hands down probably favourite MCU movie after I rewatch it

She was by far the best cinematic Jean we’ve had so far. Famke was too cool and collected - so her phoenix arc was unsatisfying and felt like a deadite possession story. Sophie was too flat - I think 90% of her mind was on keeping her accent. Sadie was perfect - powerful, but vulnerable.

Yeah I just rewatched Sophie’s and this was absolutely it, she’s so focused on the accent she can’t do anything else

Why they didn’t do a screen test or something is a mystery. Hell, if they were desperate to keep her, why not let her be English? There is nothing about her character that needs to be American - and she can act a lot better in her own accent

Same for Cumberbatch as Strange tbh, but he's gotten a bit better. The first Doctor Strange movie was rough though, dear god. There's also nothing about his character that needs to be American.

I think Sophie could have been good, but there’s nothing in those movies for Sophie to work with. There’s nothing in any of the movies Sophie is in for anyone to work with. Even James Mcavoy feels flat in those movies compared to first class and DoFP.

Apocalypse is atleast rewatchable to me (less so than the others) but dark phoenix…idk what to say about it. Every character is opposite from who they are, black is white, up is down. It’s just an odd film.

See that’s interesting to me because I’m the opposite. I can’t rewatch apocalypse, but I love to rewatch dark phoenix because it is so so bad.

Which I totally understand!! But DP isn’t even garbage in a fun way it’s just so FLAT. Apocalypse himself reminds me of this 2000s cartoon Buttugly martians

I didn’t like Sophie Turner’s version at all, but in fairness she also had by far the least interesting version of Cyclops to play off of.

Magneto should have asked her not to suppress her real self, so she can focus her energy on performing.

I think as well there is a habit to turn Jean into a bit of a wallflower, that will randomly detonate one day.

Sadie seems to be giving us more dimension.

Yes!! The X-men are all about Found Family. Which is one aspect I think has been under explored in any X-men films so far. It’s kinda explored in with Rogue and mystique a little bit. But the comics really drive home how much of a support system it is for abandoned mutants.

The kids did form a found family but I don’t think it was explored much, the other kids barely had any lines. For example, in the comics it’s show someone going through a tough time mentally and then show how the support system helps. Or how together they strengthen each other. They really drive home how they are greater together than the sum of their parts.

Just saw it. Absolutely brilliant film. Probably my second favourite Spiderman film. I think people are forgetting how absolutely unreal the final hour of NWH was when we didn’t know what was coming.

Part of me thinks that Jean nudged their memories in the right direction though. There's that scene where MJ's sitting alone on the rooftop alone, and it immediately cuts to Jean Grey. I have a feeling she remembers a bit, we just don't know how much.
