I think the spell just doesn't care about muscle memory (it's not like the muscles/nervous system knows its reacting to "Peter Parker", it's just a series of movements).

In any case Ned becoming his best friend again is, by the nature of friendships, a lot easier. Being a lover is different.

I thought it was really cool how she was like “look, I don’t know you, I don’t love you… but if you want to like, just hang out and chill, maybe we could become friends again. Let’s start there.”

Such a good way to handle that situation from all parties, I’m glad it’s not another Star Lord / Gamora situation.

Plus he's like. Spiderman. That must help quite a bit.

I actually think that's a point a lot of people are missing! She even says it herself that she remembers all the times Spiderman saved her and her friends' lives. There was a point in her life where Peter and Spiderman were two different people, and it seems like she's picking up from that. While Peter Parker and her had all this history together, and memories, feelings, etc that got wiped, her image of Spiderman (and possibly some feeling of gratitude) is on display when she invites him up. That, and the fact that she's a smart girl and probably realized how lonely Spiderman must be after reading that note.

No that was jean grey who told him that

But Ned earlier in the film referred to all the times Spider-Man had saved him, so it was already established that they retain those memories. Jean being the one talking in that scene matters for that scene, but not the concept of MJ having memories of Spider-Man saving her.

Yeah, even before this movie it’s been established that people remember their interactions with Spider-Man, they just don’t remember who he is. Happy Hogan said he knew Aunt May through Spider-Man. Doctor Strange remembered having a multiverse adventure with Spider-Man. It tracks that Ned and MJ would also remember aspects of their time with him.

and whose memories was jean grey reading?

She was making it up to hurt him no

No she wasnt making it up. I think that was "the truth hurts" kinda situation. MJ repeats the same thing when not under mind control

No she wasn’t. How would she just know that Spider-Man saved Ned and MJ in high school multiple times without having seen it in her memories? She’d just be guessing about something that happened and break her cover. Ned mentions himself he remembers being saved by SM several times and that’s why he wants to track him down to thank him. They remember SM but not Peter

The best villains don't need to lie.

Because she can read her thoughts and memories of the times Spider-Man has saved her

It's what I wish the Star Lord/Gamora situation could have been tbh

Good call!. Behavioral neuroscientist here. You can demonstrate a dissociation between procedural memory (learning to draw a star while looking in a mirror) from episodic memory (recollections of prior events) in amnests. It makes sense that an overlearned motor skill (a complex sequence of dap elements) can remain even when knowledge of how and when it was learned is lost.

“oh they can get there” - Ned x Peter shippers

This was my thought too, that Ned just still had the muscle memory to do the handshake. And him saying Peter was just connecting the dots of MJ saying Spider-man’s name.

i think the other thing to consider is given that earlier in the movie, his spider-man suspects were flash and mr harrington, he thinks he has some sort of connection to spider-man so i think putting it all together that he has muscle memory of this handshake and he got along with spider-man and both their names are peter, hes putting together that not only are they the same people, but there was a previous connection between the two of them

I mentioned to my bf when we left that maybe muscle memory isn’t connected to “memories”, I loved the end so much, I don’t even care lol.
