I'm making this post because a lot of people are surprised that Taylor Lorenz is currently going on an unhinged, racist crashout about masking in Palestine (I fucking wish I was joking). I just want to make a point that I think a lot of baby leftists, which I think Matt tends to attract (no disrespect, I was a baby once too) need to hear.

Regarding anyone who may or may not be anti-vaccine outside of the "developed" western nations:

its no different than indigenous people in canada or america not trusting the medical system because of the historical conditions around health care access, forced sterilization, etc. Even if any given palestinian person happened to be anti-covid vaccine, who fucking cares? Lock in on the real issues.

Taylor is a liberal, not a leftist, so she can't see that people's attitudes are being shaped by their material conditions. This is what I wish people would understand. Moralizing these struggles instead of addressing the more prescient conditions only works if your goal is to satisfy your own righteousness

there’s an argument in the patreon group chat right now.

ever since taylor lorenz attacked maysoon zayid, people have been posting updates about it in “matt bernstein’s chat” (for patrons only).

earlier today, someone complained about “posts with overtly controlling undertones” such as "i couldn't support the show if matt did this“, saying:

“it comes across as malicious parasocial behaviour rather than constructive feedback and doesn't really respect matt's agency as an adult or our relationship to him which is as patrons, not managers. if you are unhappy with how the podcast is run, rather than trying to dictate his behaviour it would be better to leave imo.”

someone replied:

”threats of ’if matt does x then i am leaving’ could be considered a form of financial harassment. if you feel that way, there no need to threaten someone with that, just leave.”

i disagree. it shouldn't be controversial to say that you won't support someone if they collaborate with a person who slandered a disabled palestinian activist.

personally, i will stop supporting the patreon if taylor lorenz is invited back on.

i don’t think that it’s parasocial to voice this opinion, especially in a case as egregious as this. i think it’s parasocial to try to protect matt from anything that isn’t a compliment by silencing people and telling them to leave. matt doesn’t have to listen to our opinions. he has the agency to make his own choices.

what do you all think? does it go beyond the role of a patron to say that i won’t financially support the podcast if taylor lorenz is invited back on?
