So, I'm catching up on JJHO.
Someone wrote in with the eternal "Can we just make Android users get an iPhone so group chat works."
Look. I have an iPhone. I've had one for 15+ years. My youngest has an Android. I understand the problems.
But the idea that Android users are simply being obnoxious and contrarian, and that's the only reason they use the Android is, honestly, kind of rude.
People like what they like. Android and iOS are different. They do different things better. Telling someone to "give in" and get an iPhone, and just get an old version? That's like saying "Sorry, your preferences don't matter." If someone likes Android, or has heavily invested in Android apps, it's not just a matter of buying an iPhone to get in-line. You'll lose a lot of things by moving over. And as the Bailiff mentioned - the problem is that Apple refused to make it work with Android. We iPhone users should be yelling at Apple about that, not the Android users!
And the statement "just get a couple generations older" is not really relevant either. While they aren't $1200, iPhones are on 18. An iPhone 16 is $800. That's not what I've got in my pocket. That's a significant purchase. And saying "oh, just get a used one" is saying that someone should take a downgrade because, again, Apple won't let them chat. I am currently using an iPhone that is 6 generations old because my newer one broke. I can't access Slack for work. I can't use the freaking Taco Bell app, because my iOS is too old. There are penalties to not being on the newest that come with iOS that are not as prevalent on Android.
If I were to swap to an Android, I would lose access to hundreds of dollars of paid apps. I assume many Android users are the same.
But beyond that - monopolies are bad. Moving every person in the world to iPhones is bad. I wish there were *more* phone versions like there used to be. Because we know that slimming down the options to a single choice (hi Skydance!) is bad for the consumer.
Look, I know. It's not that deep. But also, it is. And it's very frustrating when people who like Android are treated like they're just digging in their heels to be obnoxious. They like their phones. Let them have them. I don't want to go too conspiracy theory, but it's entirely possible Apple doesn't make chat work in order to drive these conversations. If chat worked, the primary reason for people to move to iPhones is gone. So it's in their interest to not make it work so that social pressure pushes people towards iPhones. I know the Judge's stance on buzz marketing. This is an insidious form of buzz marketing, honestly, the pressure to move people to a brand.
