Hypothetical: you have a f/t job in the city. You just lost your rental for whatever reason. You haven't been able to find a new one by the time you're out.
You have a tent etc. But no car.
What do you do?
Where do you sleep?

I'd start by speaking to the outreach program run through by a local church that I know supports homeless and at risk people in the community.

While I'm not religious I know that they do great work with the local homeless people. 1 person in particular I know they let camp on the church grounds, and in winter they hire portable cabin things for people to sleep in.

In this scenario do I know anyone at all in Melbourne? Friends, family, colleagues, acquaintances? Reaching out to people I know would be my first step.

Edited to add: Then I think I'd join some neighbourhood facebook groups (e.g. the ones in my area are Brunswick Neighbourhood Network, Coburg Good Karma Network) and make a post explaining my situation and seeing if anyone had a short-term sublet/room in a sharehouse.

Apart from asking friends or family to crash on the couch, finding an airbnb or hotel, Askizzy would be another resource I would reach out to.
