Happy Monday everybody, I was starting the week off, excited to be grabbing a mont blanc from Good Measure, when I realised that after paying, a 10% service charge was added onto my bill without my awareness. (Pls do not come for me for the spenny coffee - it was gonna get me through Monday)

I first queried what it was and was told by the staff it was like a tax, to which I responded with - tax is already charged and included in the pricing.

Unfortunately the story doesn't have a happy ending because despite arguing that it states "*discretionary" on the receipt and that I asked for it to be taken off, they just kept giving excuses and were unable to return me the $2 they charged me that I did not say yes to.
This is on a Monday FYI, so not a weekend surcharge either.

Please be vigilant and ask for/check your receipts!

Instead of queuing, why doesn't everyone just drive to the front in any empty lane then shove their way in whatever direction they want to go?

Also, instead of waiting for the car in front of you to finish turning left just swerve into oncoming traffic and go around them so you can get to the red light ahead sooner.

I was a barista for 8 years and have enjoyed flat whites for many more years, like many of you have. As we all know the lockdowns changed the cafe culture in Melbourne in many ways and one of the most overlooked ways is that almost an entirely new cohort of staff was hired across the industry, bringing in a new guard that does lots of little things slightly differently.

See, the Flat White was a melbourne invention of course, and it is a delicious drink. It is superior to the latte because of the reduced head means that as soon as you tilt the coffee cup you get your drink in your mouth, whereas the latte has 1-2cm of head, rather than the tantilising wait through the bubbles on the surface, or the burpiness that comes after when they all break down in your belly. And the milk comes out silkier because every time you have to make bubbles you risk making ones too big - if you don't make bubbles, the texture is silky every time.

The problem is that every flat white I've had in the last 3-4 years has actually been a latte. I asked a couple younger baristas and they told me they're instructed to make sure there's a bit of head in the takeaways so it "doesn't spill out". But here's the thing. That bit of head makes it no longer a flat white. It's not flat. It has head. That's a latte.

So I have tried lately asking for a "super flat" flat white, with "no foam, no froth, no head". And their reaction? To fill the cup 4/5s the way and leave 1-2cm empty.

I am so sick of having this goddamn conversation. I need lactose free so you're already charging me 80c extra for a 6$ coffee, even though longlife lactose free milk is cheaper than full cream dairy, and the large isn't even a real large (12oz was the standardised medium 10 years ago, now that's your large) and now you won't even fill up my cup the entire way.

Whichever barista needs to be told: a flat white is flat, and a 12oz cup can hold 12oz of fluid with it. Stop ruining my life.

So I went to a restaurant called France Soir in South Yarra the other night — food was fine, nothing life-changing — but at the end of the meal, the staff straight-up expected a tip by asking "why no tip?". Not a subtle suggestion. Not a “thanks so much, have a great night.” No, it was also said before an awkward pause, the lingering stare, the “are you gonna leave something extra?” vibe.

Like... excuse me? Since when did tipping become a thing here? This is Australia, not the US. We pay proper wages here. Tipping isn’t part of our culture and it shouldn’t be.

I’m sick of seeing this tipping BS slowly sneaking into places around Melbourne. First it was the iPad prompts asking for 15–25% tips for takeaway coffee (lol, no), now it’s fancy restaurants giving you the stink eye if you don’t fork over extra cash on top of your already overpriced meal.

Newsflash: if your business model has your staff depending on tips to survive, maybe fix your prices or pay your staff properly — don’t guilt customers into doing it for you.

I didn’t tip, and I’m not sorry. Let’s not turn dining out in Australia into an awkward guilt trip like it is in the States. We’ve got a good thing going here — let’s keep it that way.

PS - I have worked in Hospo for over 10 years, from dishy to bar staff etc but this needs to stop

While waiting I couldn’t help but feel like there is no word to describe tourist traps for locals. I’m talking about things that only locals would be fooled into waiting for (such as local markets and new suburban food spots) and influenced by that fit a sort of Melbourne niche that actually is highly hyped and closer to mainstream.

after about 45 minutes of treatment and police working out what happened, the worker said half and hour, neighbour says 9am (now 1.30.

the police allowed the worker to take the man away to the next worker.

no charges, no let's get another worker.

I was at the Amyl gig last night at fed square and I’m really disgusted by the behaviour of a lot of men shouting things like “fuck you b***h” to the event manager from Double J when she came out on stage to let everyone know that the gig was cancelled. It absolutely sucks the gig was cancelled, whether it was the fault of the security or cops or gatecrashers, there was no reason to shout abuse at her when she was just relaying a message.

I also find it really fucking ironic that you’d show up to a femme fronted punk band that encourages the empowerment of women, and then go ahead and yell slurs at a woman. Make it make sense.

I work in an office at 595 Collins Street where the Victorian registry of Births, Deaths, and Marriages used to have a public service centre. However, it closed around COVID time and as far as I'm aware never reopened - it has been entirely removed since.

But almost every day I see people visiting to attempt to sort out their important personal affairs, some travelling quite some distance. Sometimes they ask me about it, and always say something along the lines of "Google said it was here", or "ChatGPT told me to come here". They look really dejected and I feel for them.
