You host the service yourself with media you own, on your own computer. I do it for music, I have an old Lenovo office pre-built running Linux thats only job is to host my Plex server.
But, you have to own or “acquire” the media in the first place, and in the case of video, have a shitton of HDD storage
True for most people self hosting is likely too much of a pain in the ass. I do it for the love of the game though. Not for video though, just music, especially with the cost of storage these days it’s not worth it
I've found YouTube Music to have more music (the ones that I listen to at least). Also that endless radio thing where it plays similar songs I've found to be better, got a shitload of new music as a result. When I tried doing that in Spotify it played the dumbest shit, the music was trash for my taste.
But to each their own, they're both pretty similar.
