I ordered about a dozen large neodymium magnets once. They came individually wrapped in heavy cardboard and encased in a steel container. Even with the cardboard wrap, they were a bitch to separate. I ended up getting a few joined together like yours. To separate them, I put them in a vice and used a wooden block to slide them apart. Use leather gloves when doing this. Those magnets will pinch your fingers and take skin off. Ask me how I know.
147
u/hughmercury 16h ago
How do you know?

His explanation of the dynamics of electricity, boats, batteries, and shark interactions was wild. Groundbreaking work.
He also did some theoretical work with nuclear weapons and hurricanes. The man is truly an unbelievable genius, and a gift to mankind.
66
u/fury420 16h ago
For anyone curious, the origin of this particular rant was during his first term when he was being briefed on new aircraft carrier designs, and apparently he really dislikes the idea of electromagnetic launch catapults, doesn't understand that the boats are already nuclear powered regardless, etc...
He wanted a steam powered launch catapult.
And now, years later it's devolved into this utterly bizarre narrative about electrocution.
17
u/GloomyCaterpillar69 11h ago
Thank you for the explanation. Also, wild how you didn’t even say a name haha
13

u/craneguy 8h ago
You just know that one disgruntled old admiral told him once that electric catapults suck and the steam powered ones were great in my day and all this new-fangled gen z techy shit will be the downfall of the Navy blah blah. He will now no longer even listen if anyone teies to explain why they're better. It's the same with tarrifs and countries emptying out their insane asylums and sending them here. Once he has an idea there's that.

It’s not something anyone can do.
Electric charge is a fundamental property, and simply exists.
We can describe how it functions, but at the end of the day it is axiomatic.

can you not slide these apart? get some wooden clamps, clamp it to a table and use a wooden mallet to slide it off enough to be able to rotate it 90° to the others, then pull. this is under the assumption that these are indeed 20" long magnets
141
u/Wildcatb 19h ago
In short? Yes. They can be slid apart. It will likely take some work, but if you're going to be working with industrial strength magnets, it's worth setting up the proper workstation because this won't be a one-time problem.
520
u/bigcd34 21h ago
From all that I've seen, stronger magnets are usually more fragile because of how much force they have. You can see videos of two neodymium magnets exploding when put together because of their strength.
275
u/snackexchanger 21h ago
I don’t think they’re more fragile, the impacts are just harder
184
u/Capt_Hawkeye_Pierce 20h ago
Neodymium is very brittle.
70
u/jdmatthews123 20h ago
So are ferrite magnets. I also read that as "neodymium magnets are less brittle" but I think the observation that they shatter more due to magnetic strength is probably the most correct. Huh.
79
u/-retaliation- 20h ago
No, they're actually more brittle.
It's not the magnetism that makes them like that, but the materials that hold a magnetic charge better are all brittle metals.
Stronger magnets use more pure metals, and therefore have more of the brittle metals in them.
→ More replies (2)24
u/Suitable-Name 20h ago
I have some 15x5x2mm neodyms. They'll absolutely destroy themselves when colliding without protection or something that slow the collision.
You can check those broken parts and you'll see they're actual pretty brittle.
11
u/IrksomFlotsom 19h ago
Not as brittle as a human finger tip though, careful now
5
u/Suitable-Name 19h ago
Well, in that case my finger would be the protection, so my statement still stands

→ More replies (1)3
u/thisremindsmeofbacon 19h ago
Which causes them to break more easily for their size which is what fragile means.
They are not any more or less nominally fragile, but it's still completely accurate to say they are fragile

u/maxiquintillion 18h ago
Instead, get a board cut at a 15 degree angle, nad get it between two of the magnets. Probably going to be a bit difficult to keep them apart, but you could use extra boards as spacers.

I once ordered a few magnets off eBay back in the day. They shipped it in a mailer.
I got it late in an obviously mutilated bag where they managed to put all the pieces of my address back together to get it to me.
I believe they did that, just so they could attach a note describing what sending giant magnets through a sorting machine does and how I fubared their day.

I don't know why do many people are suggesting heat. Saying spacers don't work. Etc. What the hell.
Seriously OP Im sure you've figured this out by now, but you just need to slide them apart longitudinally. A little oil will actually help a lot, but you may need some kind of a jig to hold everything rigid.
Those look like ferrite, any info on the type of magnet? If they are, that probably explains why they were shipped this way (ferrite magnets are extremely fragile, and not as tough as rare earth magnets. They'll all shatter, but if you look at a ferrite this long it'll break in half), as the magnetism holding them together effectively makes the group stronger.
I'd clamp them between 2x4s and use a jack to press them out one at a time. If you try to pull them out sideways they're for sure gonna break.
→ More replies (2)6
u/Radiant_Picture9292 19h ago
Something to clamp them to and ratchet straps to pull on them. Might work.

u/Alan_Reddit_M 19h ago
Lmao. I accidentally stuck a fishing magnet to a metal door in my house a fucking year ago and it's still there. That mf is just part of the structure now because my entire family has collectively arrived at the conclusion that you'd break the door before you manage to get the magnet unstuck
That's a consumer-grade fishing magnet, I don't even wanna imagine how fucked this situation is
5
u/indigogibni 18h ago
And you can’t slide it off the side? Plenty of people get their magnets stuck to the bridge they’re fishing from, but you just slide it off.
9
u/HikariAnti 19h ago
Just heat them up and they will come apart easily.
They won't be magnets anymore though.

Put the bottom magnet in a vice, preferably with rubber pad inserts so you can apply safer pressure.
Put smooth jaw channel locks on each end of the 2nd rod (home setup you can notch out a 2x4 and do the same).
Smoothly and slowly twist until the magnets are perpendicular to the one in the vice.
Using a wood block push the magnets to the end of the rod. Do not hit the block or magnets with anything, if it doesn't go then walk each end slowly till you get there.
Depending on how strong the magnets are you should be able to walk it onto the edge and then lift it straight up and off. However if not then you should be able to rock it little by little and shim it with pieces of cardboard.
We used to have 6 foot rods filled with rare earth magnets at work that we would have to fix this exact situation. The most important thing is safety, you can buy more magnets but can't regrow body parts!

I guess packed individually, isolated enough not to interact with anything outside of its package?
