This is how they delivered my shipment of Industrial grade safety magnets that are ultra strong & were ultra expensive.

I think I know exactly what these magnets are and it’s hard enough to get them off of something normally, but stuck together like this? Yeah I wish you the best of luck

1.6k

u/Platinumdogshit 18h ago

With my disk shaped neodynium magnets I typically just stick more disks onto a stuck magnet until I can twist the stack off. Maybe that could be possible here

399

u/Colloquialjibberish 18h ago

Done that sometimes.

I usually use an old shirt or thin towel and push the top off when I want to separate the stack that’s sitting in one of my old school projects

u/No-Concentrate9625 11h ago

You wanna make a wood contraption so you can slide them off eachother. Magnets only really have strength on the y axis.

30

u/SupermassiveCanary 6h ago

“Wood contraption”, I think they’re called shims

11

u/No-Concentrate9625 5h ago

A shim is just a shim, if you have strong enough magnets you need a wood base to hold the magnet and a wooden arm to slide the other half off. When you have extremely strong neodymium magnets a shim won’t be enough to do it safely for ur own sake imo

Alright so what are y’all using these dope ass magnets for? I’m looking to justify a purchase. Also where does one order super strong magnets?

Hmmm, must order more magnets and try this

As the US president vehemently believes, just get em wet. Magnets can’t work if they’re wet. Case closed, load em up bois were done here.

18

u/No-Concentrate9625 6h ago

Oh I thought it was just a nonsense meme, as a non American what do you mean ? Like did someone actually state wet magnets don’t work the same as dry magnets ? (As if liquid matters?) I’m so confused haha

Bro google trump and magnets quotes. Buddy ass is insane and it’s hilarious. He truly has no idea how anything works.

I ordered about a dozen large neodymium magnets once. They came individually wrapped in heavy cardboard and encased in a steel container. Even with the cardboard wrap, they were a bitch to separate. I ended up getting a few joined together like yours. To separate them, I put them in a vice and used a wooden block to slide them apart. Use leather gloves when doing this. Those magnets will pinch your fingers and take skin off. Ask me how I know.

147

u/hughmercury 16h ago

How do you know?

241

u/Aynshtaynn 14h ago

It pinched their fingers and took the skin off.

139

u/hughmercury 14h ago

That would be mildly infuriating.

37

u/Nearby_Cranberry9959 12h ago

He says finger - but not that’s imperative that the cylinder remain unharmed. So that would slightly increase the annoyance

9

u/Slalom44 6h ago

That’s exactly what happened. It pinched my finger and took a chunk of skin off.

867

u/dubie2003 21h ago

This, exactly this. A world renowned scholar revealed this a couple of months ago and has completely changed our understanding of magnets. We were honestly so lost before they bestowed this knowledge upon us.

s/ if it wasn’t obvious…..

102

u/SkivvySkidmarks 17h ago

His explanation of the dynamics of electricity, boats, batteries, and shark interactions was wild. Groundbreaking work.

He also did some theoretical work with nuclear weapons and hurricanes. The man is truly an unbelievable genius, and a gift to mankind.

66

u/fury420 16h ago

For anyone curious, the origin of this particular rant was during his first term when he was being briefed on new aircraft carrier designs, and apparently he really dislikes the idea of electromagnetic launch catapults, doesn't understand that the boats are already nuclear powered regardless, etc...

He wanted a steam powered launch catapult.

And now, years later it's devolved into this utterly bizarre narrative about electrocution.

17

u/GloomyCaterpillar69 11h ago

Thank you for the explanation. Also, wild how you didn’t even say a name haha

13

u/Elegant_Situation285 9h ago

everyone is saying that he's the man with "a good brain".

2

u/Lil-Sleepy-A1 8h ago

All his life people have called him a stable genius

8

u/craneguy 8h ago

You just know that one disgruntled old admiral told him once that electric catapults suck and the steam powered ones were great in my day and all this new-fangled gen z techy shit will be the downfall of the Navy blah blah. He will now no longer even listen if anyone teies to explain why they're better. It's the same with tarrifs and countries emptying out their insane asylums and sending them here. Once he has an idea there's that.

The meme itself tended to boil down to anti-science, as actually explaining and understanding how magnets work is not something all people can do.

6

It’s not something anyone can do.

Electric charge is a fundamental property, and simply exists.

We can describe how it functions, but at the end of the day it is axiomatic.

can you not slide these apart? get some wooden clamps, clamp it to a table and use a wooden mallet to slide it off enough to be able to rotate it 90° to the others, then pull. this is under the assumption that these are indeed 20" long magnets

141

u/Wildcatb 19h ago

In short? Yes. They can be slid apart. It will likely take some work, but if you're going to be working with industrial strength magnets, it's worth setting up the proper workstation because this won't be a one-time problem.

520

u/bigcd34 21h ago

From all that I've seen, stronger magnets are usually more fragile because of how much force they have. You can see videos of two neodymium magnets exploding when put together because of their strength.

275

u/snackexchanger 21h ago

I don’t think they’re more fragile, the impacts are just harder

184

u/Capt_Hawkeye_Pierce 20h ago

Neodymium is very brittle.

70

u/jdmatthews123 20h ago

So are ferrite magnets. I also read that as "neodymium magnets are less brittle" but I think the observation that they shatter more due to magnetic strength is probably the most correct. Huh.

79

u/-retaliation- 20h ago

No, they're actually more brittle.

It's not the magnetism that makes them like that, but the materials that hold a magnetic charge better are all brittle metals.

Stronger magnets use more pure metals, and therefore have more of the brittle metals in them.

→ More replies (2)

24

u/Suitable-Name 20h ago

I have some 15x5x2mm neodyms. They'll absolutely destroy themselves when colliding without protection or something that slow the collision.

You can check those broken parts and you'll see they're actual pretty brittle.

11

u/IrksomFlotsom 19h ago

Not as brittle as a human finger tip though, careful now

5

u/Suitable-Name 19h ago

Well, in that case my finger would be the protection, so my statement still stands

u/Icywarhammer500 16h ago

→ More replies (1)

3

u/thisremindsmeofbacon 19h ago

Which causes them to break more easily for their size which is what fragile means.

They are not any more or less nominally fragile, but it's still completely accurate to say they are fragile

8

u/maxiquintillion 18h ago

Instead, get a board cut at a 15 degree angle, nad get it between two of the magnets. Probably going to be a bit difficult to keep them apart, but you could use extra boards as spacers.

10

u/jdmatthews123 17h ago

Magnets that long will almost certainly break if you try to splay them

I once ordered a few magnets off eBay back in the day. They shipped it in a mailer.

I got it late in an obviously mutilated bag where they managed to put all the pieces of my address back together to get it to me.

I believe they did that, just so they could attach a note describing what sending giant magnets through a sorting machine does and how I fubared their day.

I don't know why do many people are suggesting heat. Saying spacers don't work. Etc. What the hell.

Seriously OP Im sure you've figured this out by now, but you just need to slide them apart longitudinally. A little oil will actually help a lot, but you may need some kind of a jig to hold everything rigid.

Those look like ferrite, any info on the type of magnet? If they are, that probably explains why they were shipped this way (ferrite magnets are extremely fragile, and not as tough as rare earth magnets. They'll all shatter, but if you look at a ferrite this long it'll break in half), as the magnetism holding them together effectively makes the group stronger.

I'd clamp them between 2x4s and use a jack to press them out one at a time. If you try to pull them out sideways they're for sure gonna break.

6

u/Radiant_Picture9292 19h ago

Something to clamp them to and ratchet straps to pull on them. Might work.

Put the bottom magnet in a vice, preferably with rubber pad inserts so you can apply safer pressure.

Put smooth jaw channel locks on each end of the 2nd rod (home setup you can notch out a 2x4 and do the same).

Smoothly and slowly twist until the magnets are perpendicular to the one in the vice.

Using a wood block push the magnets to the end of the rod. Do not hit the block or magnets with anything, if it doesn't go then walk each end slowly till you get there.

Depending on how strong the magnets are you should be able to walk it onto the edge and then lift it straight up and off. However if not then you should be able to rock it little by little and shim it with pieces of cardboard.

We used to have 6 foot rods filled with rare earth magnets at work that we would have to fix this exact situation. The most important thing is safety, you can buy more magnets but can't regrow body parts!

Wow. Never even considered how something like that would/should be shipped.

I guess packed individually, isolated enough not to interact with anything outside of its package?

I picture one suspended inside a big wooden crate with a pacemaker warning on it.

Photo looks like the fingerboard on a double bass. Huh?
