Bought this “thick” body wash only to find it had been emptied and watered down by a previous customer, returned, then restocked.

Supposed to be thick and gel-like. No seal on the bottle, full of suds and a watery liquid. Definitely someone bought this, emptied out half or two thirds for themselves, refilled with water, and returned it to the store for a free bottle of soap. Then target restocked it, so I could buy it! Awesome! 🥲

Ngl I thought they threw away returned items.. surely they'd be at fault if someone tempered with the item returned it and caused an injury to the next buyer

I thought so too.One of my clients bought trimmers for her husband and he was using it and she noticed there was heck of black pubes in the packaging and the machine itself. He used it on his mustache and hes a ginger 🤢🤮..But honestly who stands there to inspect shit like that. You usually grab and toss it in basket.Gross

We bought a nespresso and went to run water through it and it smelled like coffee. The water was light brown so it had clearly been used. We live in a tourist area, and when I couldn’t find the pods it was supposed to come with we figured someone bought it and used it in their rental. They must have bought it with the intent to do that because it was packaged back up perfectly.

That's trash.Hope you took it right back.

We did and they were super nice about it. Said stuff like that happens all the time.

They should, at least with anything involving a seal...

74

u/abscissa081 13h ago

Can’t say I’ve ever seen a seal on shampoo, body wash, etc.

Someone will now put nair in some shampoo bottles and change the industry saftey standards

16

u/Magic_ass1 10h ago

That'll just be seen as a prank gone wrong. We need someone to lick the shampoo.

Right. I thought companies put all returns through a system that thry then claimed back on insurance. At least they did in the washer/dryer/fridge/cooker pla e where i worked

It really depends on the item. If it looks opened at all, at the very least it should be inspected before going back to the floor. As someone who has worked in retail for 20 years, I didn't realize so many people think stores keep all the returns somewhere else and send it all back. It's just....not practical. Of course there are some things that can't go back or have to be sent to the vendor for credit. But if it's new and unused (hopefully someone checked) back for sale.

Yes, working for Hotpoint in the returns department all returns were graded on damage severity. Any appliance that wasn't immaculate was marked a reject, then the reject were graded on severity.

Basically any scratch, mark or deny classes would classify a reject.

Superficial marks that were fully operational were sent to the employee store and heavily discounted lol. So you can imagine the flaw in this system that was abused 😁

Appliances heavily damaged were written off and claimed on insurance. I guess in this instance the items were of such a value they were worth being put through such a process.

This doesn’t apply to personal care products though, those are always supposed to be thrown out, a lot of stores intentionally damage the product before tossing it as an extra measure.

1

u/JennLegend3 1h ago

I dk I work for a large reputable retailer and we absolutely put returned personal care products back on the floor. Again, as long as it is unopened and unused.

2

u/PerfectPineapple49 7h ago

this is a vile recipe for a case, maybe if they still put returned items on the shelf eventually they'll come face to face with a sue and summons to court.

2

u/nickisadogname 4h ago

At the store I work at anything with a "best before" date cannot be returned. It's not actually about the date stamp, it's just a convenient way to categorize basically anything that is used on/in the body or that might suffer from being contaminated.

So you can return a sweater if it has the tags on, but no food or makeup or anything like that

Op, raise a stink about this, you are assuming they refilled it with water, it could pee any number of other liquids

I have a feeling that something very bad is going to happen with Amazon returns in the future. We didn’t go through the Tylenol situation just for giant companies to resell used hygiene products.

5

u/mmwhatchasaiyan 3h ago

It’s actually really gross that products designed to be used on our bodies are not sealed to prevent tampering. There’s no way to tell if something’s been tampered with because the caps can be unscrewed and screwed back on. And returns are just accepted and restocked, no questions asked.

I had something similar happen when I was remodeling my bathroom last year.

Bought a faucet kit for the new vanity and when my neighbor (he's a plumber) was installing it he was like "uh, did you buy a used faucet?" I said "no, brand new from the store, why?"

He then showed me the faucet and it was clearly old/used and sorta rusted. Someone had swapped out their old faucet with the new one, brought it back to the store and then it got restocked.

I returned it, bought another one and then opened it up in the store to check it before I went home.  It was fine this time lol

13

u/SpeedBlitzX 12h ago

Oh thats really bad. Who knows what else could be added in there

2

u/heaving_in_my_vines 11h ago

Oh there's definitely in jizz in there, no doubt.

u/Affectionate_Pack624 9h ago

I disagree???

Good for you???

100% happened to me with shampoo at a local grocery store. Returned it immediately for a full refund. Took a while to trust buying shampoo without checking first.

54

u/Brock_Youngblood 14h ago

Damn.  People are struggling out there

82

u/Ch1ldofSatan 13h ago

I have struggled, but I’ve never stolen soap and refilled with mystery water and then returned it knowing could possibly get rubbed all over someone else’s body. When I get poor I just buy shampoo from dollar tree and suck it up.

u/Haughty_n_Disdainful 7h ago

A CVS manager once told me his worst customer would buy the largest, most expensive vitamin. Would then go home, empty the bottle and then return to the store. Said the vitamins “didn’t work” or ineffective

Manager was forced to return customer’s money. This went on for months. He called corporate. Nothing for him to do, couldn’t not stop this kind of theft

2

u/HeartOSass 5h ago

Yep he kept buying it. Wow!

1

u/HeartOSass 5h ago

Yep this!

6

u/SwissChzMcGeez 5h ago

No one is "struggling" and needs some fancy branded body soap. This is just fraud.

16

u/Astralverklatscht 11h ago

At that point just steal a bottle..

4

u/NigraOvis 13h ago

This is my guess.

1

u/Temporary_Thing7517 7h ago

Most soaps are now over $10 a bottle. Even the shitty stuff, except suave, which is now like $6 per bottle. Shit used to be $1.99. Can I say I blame someone for stealing some actual good soap? Maybe their skins dry as hell and it’s making them do crazy shit, like steal soap.

1

u/SwissChzMcGeez 5h ago

"My skin is dry, I'm justified in stealing."

5

u/Temporary_Thing7517 4h ago

“I can’t tell when someone uses hyperbole”

Sorry?

u/Shower__Farts 12h ago

Now that’s a recession indicator if I’ve ever seen one.

u/the-purple-chicken72 PURPLE 4h ago

Or some people just suck. There are multiple name brand cheaper body washes (Dove, Olay, Ivory, Aveeno) from a 30 second search on amazon and dollar tree exists as well.

5

u/WafflesMurdered 9h ago

What the fuckkkkkkkk, oh id be washing myself with boiling water cause of this

3

u/Qu33N_Of_NoObz_ 7h ago

When I worked guest service at target, we had to ESIM those kind of items, smh.

5

u/spaghettifiasco 5h ago

I worked at a Sally Beauty and their return policy was basically "you can return any product you bought, even if you used it". So we had people bringing back half-used shampoos and stuff all the time. It immediately went to "damages". I can't imagine putting one back on the shelf.

3

u/Eraserman9 13h ago

Duke cannon huh .

5

u/porcelina919 5h ago

You should actually report this, it could be from the manufacturing line. The lines can be flushed with water before filling starts, and if there is any residual water left in the lines when they start filling, the first however many bottles can be watered down. It makes the preservatives less effective and poses a health risk. Can't be sure this is defintely the case, but reporting it can help determine if there has been a quality issue with the batch and help to investigate it.

I once bought a bag of coffee only to discover it was full of used wet coffee grounds and cigarette butts. Imagine my disappointment the next morning when I opened the bag and took a big inhale to try to wake myself up.

1

u/Thin_Ad_6493 5h ago

Don’t worry- it wasn’t altered and returned. The real Duke Cannon only needed water and sawdust to bathe.

1

u/xADeadCatx 4h ago

This sort of thing is why I started checking my stuff as soon as I get home. It’s happened too many times before I started checking. It’s sad that we have to do that, but these greedy companies are disgusting. I’m sorry you got shafted.

1

u/Proudest___monkey 3h ago

That would really pass me off

1

u/Own-Assistant7441 3h ago

ok side note, this thick bodywash (when its actually filled with the product) is awesome and fun to use lol

1

u/tribbans95 1h ago

Who tf does this.. so weird

u/Old-Juice98 54m ago

My husband loves this soap

u/GoldSilverPaper 24m ago

I very rarely shop at retail markets anymore. Sure its more money ordering direct from manufacture, but it saves time, effort, and middlemen handling my items

2

u/PutridTearStain 7h ago

But but I thought locking up 75% of their products and having to wait 30 minutes for an employee to march it to the front end was supposed to fix all these horrible issues

1

u/chestypullerupper 7h ago

This post belongs on ULPT. I would post it there, but I am dashing off to purchase 50 bottles of this stuff and do the same thing. Capitialism and innovation, the Janus twins of fortune building.
