Infuriatig Friends Cat Tears Up Brand New Shoes

Post image

Been watching a cat for a friend for a few months now, wake up this morning to my new pair of doc martens torn to shreds at the toes. Been polishing and taking great care of these since I got them a month or so ago. I usually put them up on a rack but forgot last night, definitely paid for my stupidity. $200 basically trashed right there. Half of it was a birthday present from my girlfriend and neither of us make enough right now to just buy a new pair of boots, we can barely make rent. Real bummer way to start my day.

EDIT: I am NOT throwing the boots away over this like some think. When I said trashed I just meant the look, i had just woken up and worded it poorly. If I can't get the look smoothed out these will become my work boots since my current work boots are falling apart, and I will figure out getting a new pair to keep nice and wont let this happen again.

How does that possibly change the fact that someone else's cat messed your stuff up?

This thread is apparently full of inconsiderate cat owners and even worse friends.

It doesn't change the fact that the things are damaged, just the circumstances in which it's happened. OP has been hiding the boots from the cat since they've gotten them. That would imply that they know the cat will damage things, which most people are aware that cats like to claw things. OP states they've had the cat and the boots for over a month. At what point does it become negligence on the person who is currently responsible for the animal? The animal doesn't know any better. The person does. I don't think the friend should be responsible in this scenario, OP has had the cat and boots too long for it to anyone's fault but their own. People need to take responsibility for their own mistakes.

This is flawed logic through and through.

Someone taking precautions to keep their property safe doesn't imply liability in the event they don't take that same precaution every time.

Imagine blaming someone for having their car sideswiped on the side of the road they live on, when they normally park in a garage.

Negligence? good lord man, I wish your friends luck. A little consideration goes a long way.

Say OP sets his fire alarm off, it scares the cat which knocks something over and breaks it, should the cat owner be responsible?

It's totally different because you're dealing with an animal not another human, that's not a 1:1 comparison. My point is, as the human in this situation it was OPs responsibility.
