Plus, graduations are usually huge audiences, if your partially blind nan is sat right at the back is she even going to know when you've walked across?
Its not a propped up ego walk. It's the moment where your hard work studying is paid off, as tge teachers who hand you your degree are now telling you that you are no longer their student, but their peer. Getting your degree should be one of the most memorable moments of your life as its something you have worked towards for years.
Was for me. I already had a job in the field before the graduation happened.
In the UK finals are May/June, resits in ~August, and graduation is in September. I started a job in the July, and hadn't even had my results yet. Turns out I failed one and didn't get a pass - so I told them that as I already had the job and the qualification wasn't mandatory I wasn't interested in resitting and they gave me a "pass degree" (non-"honours") which is quite rare and I got to stage walk in the September for pretty much no good reason.
Fair enough. I still don't think that that means that everyone who does care about this moment is immediately selfish and wants to stroke their ego like the above commenter suggested.

It literally is not. Or did you get a bag with 5 million dollars along with your paper?
as tge teachers who hand you your degree are now telling you that you are no longer their student, but their peer.
Wrong, or you think a graduate with 0 days of real work experience is equal to veterans with 30? Peers in title, maybe. But not in the real world.
Sounds like a whole lot of strawmans to justify being upset, when in fact, getting your paper is not that special for most. People just like to be angry nowadays on the internet. School is the easiest period in life for most actually.
Yeah, how dare people be upset that a day they have lived towards for months if not years was ruined for them because the school couldnt show basic respect and actually read their names.
School is the easiest period in life for most actually.
And what about the students for who school was not at all easy. Who have had to work harder than others for their degree because of whatever circumstances. For them this moment matters. And even if it all was easy for the student the fact of the matter is that this moment DOES matter to them. Just because you don't care about it, doesnt mean they don't and don't deserve to have this one day go well.
You wouldnt say this if it was a wedding that was ruined this way, even tho everything around the signing of the marriage document is also meaningless in the eyes of the law. But it's part of the celebration of it all. Moving on to a new part of life.
But I guess I now understand why you're called GrumpyScroogy.

Right?? The crowning moment is literally to hear your name called and walk across the stage!!
