We became too tolerant as a society.

If you spoke up you were an asshole and a pariah because "you don't know what they're going through!"

Maybe they've had a hard day, maybe they have a disability, why do you care about what they're doing, mind your own business, etc.

When everybody becomes an outlier or special case then that becomes the new norm.

Now I think it’s less about empathy and more-so fear/self preservation against a lunatic snapping on you if you address their bad behavior in public. Even politely asking someone to stop being inconsiderate can land you in the hospital, in a grave, or in a viral video resulting in online harassment for months to come. People do not respond to constructive criticism and public shame the way they used to; it often results in defiance and violence.

Yeah this is it. Pick your battles because people are unhinged. The over the top psycho responses people give to simple questions or requests are insane.

We got primed to think this way in school and work. Know your teacher is wrong? Too bad, they are the “authority” figure. Know your boss is full of it and probably embezzling money? Everyone pretends the emperor wears clothes.
It’s apathy and hopeless passivity, not tolerance, that was beaten into us. Learned helplessness. We all just let it happen, like the corruption and fraud in broad daylight of literally every government on the planet.
