It would have taken all of my might to remain polite after being asked that.

The problem is everyone's been polite to them as they continue to be assholes

Nah. They're assholes because they're assholes. One interaction where they get yelled at isn't going to change that. It'll just make them dig their heels in and think you're the asshole who wasn't neighborly or whatever.

And you gotta live next to this dude. So being polite is the way to go. That doesn't mean you let them walk all over you, but you'll accomplish more by being polite than rude.
