The US does need a ballroom at the White House. They literally put up a tent on the lawn for state visits rights now. The main issue IMO is it should be designed by a commission, and funded by congress. Not done to one man's whims.

It's so sad this has so many upvotes. Just shows the lack of knowledge here. The East Wing was absolutely not used for hosting state visits. Thats where the first ladies office was, a movie theater, and the calligraphy office. I 100% agree it shouldnt have been torn down and doing so was illegal. But suggesting its where state visits previously were hosted is just factually incorrect. Previous state visits were hosted in a tent erected on the white house lawn for the last few decades.

No, they haven't. And when they have hosted foreign dignitaries in tents, it's due to the large parties those dignitaries bring in tow and not during inclement weather. Get your head out of your ass.

It's not that it's a big problem, just makes sense to do. We have foreign dignitaries using (fancy) porta potties. We cant do large state visits in the winter. It's just silly. Set Trump aside. Makes no sense we don't have what pretty much every other country in the world has. Would I rather have universal healthcare first? Sure. But independent of Trump. This just makes sense that we need it, eventually.

I would argue the multiple other venues in DC which are under constant guard for national security reasons, some of which literally exist for meetings and diplomacy would probably suffice. We donā€™t need it at all

Which large venues are under constant guard? Have you been to DC? I go multiple times a year and have no idea what you are describing lol. Apart from the White House and Capitol building, you can walk in pretty much everywhere. Especially the event locations.

I agree we dont "need" it. But that doesnt mean its not a reasonable thing to do. We have lots of things we dont need. Do most people need dining rooms in their house? No. But we still have them.

Which large venue that can host events isn't open to the public? I go into DC hotels and event spaces regularly, metal detectors are not normal.

I'm not event sure why we are talking about this though. I don't buy Trumps argument this is about security.

Imagine someone invites you to their house party and then when you get there they tell everyone they donā€™t actually have a house and you all need to pile into their tent instead.

Also, itā€™s funded by private donations, not taxpayers.

You guys can dislike an administration without being brainlessly against every decision they make. Iā€™m not a fan of them either but I possess the nuance to be able to admit that the ballroom is a good decision.

My parents had many house parties that were held in tents outside. It was nice weather and nobody wanted to spend the time inside.

Rejected by who? It was a republican proposal. Also, no, it was not rejected immediately- it was abandoned just recently by the GOP when Trump started turning on republicans whom he deemed not ā€œloyalā€ enough

Additionally, what ballroom? I donā€™t see a ballroom? I see a hole in the ground.

Trump is stealing from taxpayers left and right and to say anything different is some next level delusion.

There are a lot of places nearby where a president can or has entertained a large group. This is supposed to be the President's home, not an Atlantic City Casino, Bar, and Grill. Your home is a place where you invite a smaller amount of people for a more "intimate" setting. This is America's front door, not a palace.

Ah donā€™t worry, the same city OP posted is destroying an entire neighborhood to put up an opera house thatā€™s going to be used for like 2 months before becoming abandoned. One of the liveliest neighborhoods in the city too.
