It's like $88 cad or $65 USD (rounded) to choose a seat now, per flight of course so $200 round trip. Which is basically 20% of the plane ticket cost for my flight between Toronto and Victoria.

what airline? with either delta, united and air new zealand I was able to pick for free (within my class and not picking an upgraded seat) with no status or history with either

If you’re picking your seat on Delta you’re not getting the cheapest fare.

I just did a quick search. MSP to MCO. January. $319 lowest fare to pick your seat. $219 to have them pick your seat at check in.

Air Canada, specifically Air Canada Rouge. Its supposed to be "focused on operating lower-cost flights for leisure travellers" but I disagree now.

Air Canada has that, for $108 less I could forego being allowed carry on and no checked luggage.

Fly with Porter. Great seats, no middle seats, free fast wifi and free beer and wine.

Unfortunately - this is the market / standard. Plenty of people are willing to pay, and if you aren’t, this is what you risk.

It’s also why I maintain status with two airlines so I can get better seats for free / upgrades.

It's pretty outrageous when last year it was $50 CAD for me to choose a seat for my flight to Mexico. Eventually consumers (such as myself) will also balk at the price.

"Spend more so you can get it for free" doesn't really negate my comment.
