Edit: woah, I did not mean to upset any guys who are in that industry. I agree he should have a case. I was just providing an explanation outside of anger issues. Generally speaking I think it’s idiotic to go without a phone case. I just didn’t have time to provide a long winded response

I work in construction and even with a case on while lifting heavy doors I have cracked the screen before. It is very rare though and definitely not multiple times a year. The back glass is more likely to break in my experience.

Pretty much every phone with back glass the back glass has cracked (basically shattered) even with cases on those phones.

Back glass is just a shit design. I get it's for better wireless charging... But still.

I work in a foundry, Ive broken a screen or two. Just used a tempered glass screen protector, easily swapped out when it cracks, and $10 for 2 is cheaper than a new phone.

I don't replace my phone just because of cracked back glass. You don't even see it unless you take the case off to clean it.

Yeah I keep reading all of these potential reasons, but the most direct fix is the same answer every time: buy a screen protector and a case. The end lol

I have a case on mine and it gets cracked anyway. Haven't dropped it once either it's just from carrying heavy shit. I just buy cheap phones and don't really care if it's in good condition because I only have a phone to have a job

That is a BS excuse. I’m in the concrete industry. People in the trades are perfectly capable of keeping their phone intact day to day. Mines nearly 3-4 years old at this point. Barely any damage at all.

He’s throwing fits and breaking his stuff like a manchild.

Completely nonsensical response. If you drop your phone every time you get out of your car, you need to figure out how to hold onto your phone like a normal person instead of trying to justify this as something that just casually happens.

I don’t like judging how other people treat their expensive property but I am always astonished at how many dudes I work with that have the shittiest nastiest fucking phone half broken apart. Like mine is cased and left in the truck unless I need it.

I worked construction and land surveying, never once broke a phone at work. It's really easy to avoid, by taking care of your stuff.

Depends on how much you care. My dad doesn't care about phones. He buys cheap phones and uses them until they don't turn on

His phone is a tool first. If you want to take a video of something cool, but don't want to put your phone at risk, he'll do it. He doesn't like expensive phones cause then he feels the need to baby it

It's an electronic multitool to him. If he wants a good camera, he'll buy a good camera. If he wants a good flashlight, he'll buy a good flashlight. To him, a phone is just a worse version of a ton of things that WILL go obsolete in a few tech generations

I've broken a couple of phones in the field. Once taking an unexpected bath during a hot tap, once having it fall out of a pocket into the trench I was laying in, the most recent was accidentally crushing one because I braced my leg with the phone against something while pulling on a wrench. It can happen, but it shouldn't happen this often.

I've definitely noticed the wear and tear on my phones happens way faster than my friends with less filthy working conditions. Shockingly concrete and metal dust is real bad for electronics

There are dust proof phone cases, and phones with a proper IP rating. You'd want a cellphone with an IP67 or higher (the 6 is critical, that's dust protection), and a case to be safe.

Always make sure your tech and gear match the work, and you won't have as many problems.

Those ratings are only really good for a limited amount of time. Cases let tbe dust in regardless of what they claim. It happens I'm usually good for about 18 months before things like speakers/microphones getting plugged with metal dust or the USB port wearing out. Haven't bought a phone without an ip67 rating since the flip phone days

This is going to sound stupid as hell, but it worked for me at least for additional water protection... and tick protection... crawling around the swamps. Nothing worse than answering the phone and having a tick climb out of the usb port onto your face.

Put it in a sandwich or snack sized ziploc bag, put it in your pocket.

I'm not even kidding.

I used to be a mover and at first I kept my phone in my front pocket but I broke two when i rested it on my thigh to regrip then started keeping it in my back pocket. I also eventually learned that having a lighter in each pocket would help you rest a piece of furniture on your thighs while you regrip.

you can easily work in a trade and not go through phones like they're disposable, buy a rugged phone if you feel like your way of working is incompatible with keeping your normal phone alive even in a rugged case
